As had been trailed, there were some pretty meaty revisions to the core PCE deflator in today's release. Mostly concentrated in non-housing, non-healthcare services and, within that, portfolio management.

What's happened to crude oil flows from the Middle East since the US war on Iran began? 🛢️ Has Iran effectively choked off the Strait of Hormuz? Or is the Strait now basically open as the US claims? & what's happened to other exit routes? Here's a helpful way of visualising it...📊 👇1/8

If you loved bonds when they were yielding 4%, you're going to really love bonds now they're yielding 5%. No? Oh, ok then.

If the Premier League had a sense of humour it would wait until the last weekend of the season before handing out a points deduction just large enough to take them from the top of the league into the relegation zone.

1/2 Me+@jaredb-econ.bsky.social are out w/ a new piece examining how much revenue is needed to justify hyperscaler AI capex. We estimate that incremental AI revenue is currently b/n $86-$188.1B for the hyperscalers, but they need $13.1-$18.7 *trillion* over the next decade for that to pencil out.

This move in expectations for the Fed funds rate has been so so rapid. Markets have moved from discounting 1, maybe 2 hikes a month ago to now pricing roughly equal probabilities of 3 or 4 hikes on top of the one already delivered.

Global bond markets. Marked to Market. Part I.
Government debt is being marked to market. We're now relying on price-sensitive investors to absorb sovereign bond issuance going forward.

1/n: Because of record-breaking diesel prices, the Trump Admin is reportedly considering a diesel export ban. There is one part of the country that this would squeeze tremendously, risking physical shortages that would prevent people from heating their homes in winter: New England (PADD 1A).
