Breaking: the Met Police has submitted charging files to the Crown Prosecution Service resulting from its Grenfell fire investigation. The files cover 54 individuals and 20 companies and cover charges including fraud, misconduct in public office and manslaughter

Good piece on prices but doesn’t really mention the other side: transactions. Turnover has collapsed in London, especially central areas. That means the price evidence is based on thin volumes and most people are sitting it out (thanks high rents!). That’s prevented further price falls.

HMRC have filed a petition to wind up online estate agent Purplebricks. Purplebricks told me it had been lodged in error and withdrawn by HMRC, but they have not substantiated this despite repeated requests. And their accounts are three months late.

Perhaps the most frequently cited evidence for H2B inflating house prices at the time was the flawed ONS new build price index. It consistently over estimated price growth for new build relative to existing homes in the short term which was then revised away several months later.

Didn’t have to use it as we made our connecting train home but a delay leaving Paris this afternoon (people on the line) meant we got a nice handwritten form explaining the issue so that we could exchange our GWR tickets for a later train if we missed our booked one.

Aside from getting basic facts wrong - social rents are not subsidised the capital cost to build is part funded by grant, this article is at odds with almost all parliamentary reports, think tanks, and representative bodies on the dire need for more social housing. www.economist.com/leaders/2026...
