In researching the history of narcotics, one point I hit on was that the police used accusations of drug trafficking as a pretext for the arrest of a large number of Jews on November 9, 1938. Nazi persecutions cannot be cleanly divided between the "normal" criminals and the politically persecuted.

This is meant to be a provocation, but it show a major generational shift in the German far right - during the Cold War, the far right followed the expellee lobby and talked about 1937 borders (i.e reclaiming East Prussia and Silesia from the USSR and Poland but pre Anschluss of Austria)

This term I’m teaching in Strasbourg and staying at a Chateau in which Nazis housed officers during the occupation. When the AfD won in Saxony-Anhalt I thought “that’s bad, but they’re not going to invade Strasbourg any time soon.” Now this.

These arguments were common for years as quasi-edgy lefty critiques of the German status quo and a way to discredit the post-unification mass privatization program. In recent years, however, this sort of rhetoric is the domain of the far right to discredit the democratic constitutional order.

Since it is regularly asserted on social media that reunification was somehow illegitimate, I think it important to note that the process of German reunification was driven by a democratic process supported by a supermajority of the East German population.

Kohl: Berliner
Klimakonferenz muß
ein Signal setzen
Bonn wird Sitz des ständigen Klima-Sekretariats
Kinkel fordert weltweite Steuerreform für Umweltschutz
BERLI N (Tsp/dpa/AP).
The term “remigration” is associated with the extreme right and only came into widespread usage in 2023-4. Even Germany’s AfD avoided using the term in 2024 for fear of scaring away voters. Today the US government is celebrating the “victories” it’s racked up in the “ethnic cleansing” column.

On the death penalty, for people claiming the guillotine is a ”humane“ way to execute people compared to botched lethal injection: the first execution of a civilian in East Germany in 1950 was by guillotine and it malfunctioned so they had to drop the blade three times to finish the job.

A feature of post-war German democracy has been that the left has traditionally had far more of a firewall to the far left than the center right has had with the far right. The central role of anti-communism in Cold War West Germany created a structural asymmetry that has not been reckoned with.
