An under-appreciated fact is the extent to which our preferences are shaped by what we perceive to be available. This matters for (among other things) debates about social mobility, immigration or the state of the public sphere.

This is naive of Burnham. If ADUG's investments in Manchester were profitable, somebody else would have made them. And if they're not, it's reputation laundering. Luckily, there's no precedent for there being any corruption in urban regeneration. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Praise for Burnham's speech is OK; it was better than Healey's vacuous drivel. But it misses a key point about politics - that we over-rate words & under-rate power, interests, administration etc.

Treating the triple lock issue as one of pensioners vs non-pensioners is silly identity politics. The qn is: how do we best prepare for our retirements, & should we sacrifice some of this preparation to pay for social care insurance? I need convincing.

True. Labour should be calling higher petrol/diesel prices & higher bond yields the Trump tax - which is far more accurate than saying that Truss crashed the economy.

The problem of social care is largely one of a missing insurance market. The obvious solution is to pay for care via general taxes, treating these as if they were insurance premia. Cutting benefits or the triple lock are bad alternatives.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

I agree with this, but would base the case for tax rises not upon longer-term fiscal forecasts which are unreliable, but upon the need to reallocate labour to the NHS, care work, housebuilding, decarbonization etc. Such reallocation requires that consumer spending be restrained.
