So CA people, Prop 45 (CEQA amendment) seems very good but most groups I usually support are opposing it. Is it actually a bad reform, or is this just NIMBYism?

the idea that immersing yourself in gruesome violence is a technique to build empathy is something which everyone who has ever studied the subject will tell you is not just false but 180 degrees removed from the truth.

Peter Magyar is currently enacting a Liberal Currents fantasy where he amends the constitution to ban anyone associated with the old regime from ever holding office again and is somehow polling at 68% (he won with 53%) and I’m not saying that’s possible anywhere else but Dems should like, ask him

The heroic dilemma for Superman is the temptation to control: he is powerful beyond all others, and he is legitimately Good. The temptation to make himself king, to enforce his goodness via power, is a hinge point to his character. A Lex who is evil, but acts within the law, hits that hinge point

In English you say thank you very much, while in Italian you say grazie mille which means a thousand thanks. Thus we can conclude that English speaking thanks are continuous while Italian thanks are discrete. In Spanish, muchas can mean much or many, so Spanish thanks exhibit wave-particle duality

if Eliezer Yudkowsky was born into a somewhat poorer family and missed a couple lucky breaks, he’d have ended up as an archetypal specimen of your friend’s older cousin who keeps boa constrictors and makes you listen to him talk about quantum physics in his parent’s basement in exchange for weed

Stop Using Anti-NUCLEAR Language
Instead of:
"If my parents find out about this, they'll go nuclear."
"This discourse is radioactive."
"The country must avoid letting Al become a Chernobyl moment."
"I'm worried about the fallout from this decision."
Say:
"If my parents find out about this, they'll have a blowout on their offshore oil platform resulting in 4.9 million barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico."
"This discourse is leaking up to 9% of its production in the form of methane directly into the atmosphere, leading to the greenhouse effect and contributing to the melting permafrost and the rapid warming of the Arctic."
"The country must avoid letting Al become a Benihu Colliery moment, the worst coal mining disaster in history, in which a gas and coal dust explosion resulted in 1,549 deaths."
"I'm worried about the severe acid rock drainage that might develop from this situation, requiring decades of additional monitoring and treatment and leading to long-term health effects for the nearby population."

I do sort of get why a lot of education PhDs go a little insane because one thing that working in a high need school will make extremely clear to you is that school is a permeable part of society and new way of teaching fractions won’t fix a kid not having a bed to sleep on.

And a portion of this *is* that AI is fundamentally changing their jobs *as coders* which SV culture has told them for years is what makes their absurd salaries justifiable and is evidence of their superior intelligence. Coding was never just a job like other jobs it was a marker of superhumanity.

it would shock the average person how many anti-trans activists had a partner or child who came out as trans and, rather than being supportive, they obsessively worked to "purge" transness from their lives (as well as society)...

politics is not monocausal etc etc, but we def get a bit too clever by half trying to explain why people vote for right wing parties, especially in europe imo. 'they're against immigration so they vote for the most anti-immigrant party' explains a whole lot.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see a dragon sitting on a pile of treasure. A speech bubble pointing off panel reads, “Dragon, why do you have all this treasure?”
In the second panel we zoom in on the dragons face. He simply says “shiny”.
In the third panel we pan to the left and see that there is a crow standing next to the dragon on the treasure.
In the fourth panel we zoom in on the crows face. He says “hell yeah”.

Thing is, soaps are back. That's what "second screen" shows are, unlabeled soaps. They're just the worst parts of soaps (meandering plots that go nowhere, constant repetition for viewers who aren't paying attention), without the benefits (super cheap and efficient to make, scads of long lost twins).
