Did you know that about half of the climate change we have seen to date is caused by OTHER greenhouse gases beyond CO2? We tend to underestimate the importance of methane, N2O, f-gases, and so on.

my takeaway from climate week nyc is that "climate storytelling" is a little too much "we must reimagine our deepest souls in relationship to mother nature and the moral abyss of the polycrisis into which we must now stare" and not enough "ok but get a heat pump"

I'm biased because I'm a math teacher but I say that the two things math teaches us is numerical scale and the importance of precise definitions, and there is a huge lack of these things in America. Which is a giant problem! You need to know how big things are! you need to know what things mean!

innumeracy is my least favorite flavor of anti-intellectualism and I am very cranky about the false choice we're presented. Do you want to learn math or read books? I'm sorry but you're going to have to do both

To my knowledge there is only one climate science book that begins with the Trojan War
Wonder

it is a serious thing // just to be alive / on this fresh morning / in this broken world.
-Mary Oliver

The sun rises over the doomed city. Outside the walls is ten years of wreckage, the mechanical skeletons of burned chariots and the white bones of men and horses. Cassandra stands on the ramparts, drinks her morning coffee, and tries to forget last night’s visions. When she allows her mind to rest, Cassandra sees things. Over and over, she has seen the fall of Troy. She has seen the murder of her family. She has seen her own capture and enslavement by the victorious Greek general and then her own murder at the hands of his wife. She has—and this is some consolation—seen his as well.

Scientists warned you about: ♨️ more/longer/hotter heatwaves (hot planet=hot weather) 🌀 stronger storms (warm water=hurricane food) 🌧️ downpours (warm air holds more water vapor) 🌵 droughts (warm air is thirstier) 🔥 fire weather (hotter, drier) 🌊 sea level rise (land ice melts, warm water expands)

Human Nature by @drkatemarvel.bsky.social is so incredibly good that I've updated my favorites shelf on StoryGraph! 5 out of 5 stars, highly recommend. The book is so well researched and so well written; science interwoven with storytelling. Absolutely incredible, thank you for writing it. 💜
Five book covers displayed under the title of Favorites: "Emergent Strategy" by adrienne maree brown, "A Psalm for the Wild Built" by Becky Chambers, "Human Nature: Nine Ways to Feel Better by Connecting with Nature" by Kate Marvel, "Let This Radicalize You" by Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba, and "Devotions" by Mary Oliver.

Below the shelf, the text from StoryGraph describes my reading preferences: "Mainly reads nonfiction books that are reflective, emotional, and informative. Typically chooses medium-paced books that are <300 pages long."
