Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

It would be a fairly quick win if the government was to regulate the overpowered e-bikes that are currently illegal but hard to catch. Public would cheer, tax income go up, and the riders would have to start being more cautious if they were registered and trackable

Background shows a collision involving cars and drivers. Texting quotes says “speed wasn’t a factor” which is what police and media often say when someone wasn’t obviously speeding, even when the speed limit is too high. The drums have to be tuned This probably applies to all of you. People in possession of human souls who have at least on occasion felt the divine in a work of art. Everything I write myself and everything I love to read or listen to or watch has one bedrock component to it which
is this: Jesus Christ I am alive right now and you are alive right now and someday we will not be but for the duration of this we are both stupidly and beautifully
alive. Please bear witness to my humanity and take some small portion of it for yourself. Return the favor to
someone else later when you can.

What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.
