Does anyone know of a reverse-searchable Shakespeare concordance? That is, I want to be able to look up Shakespearian words by inputting modern definitions

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

How do you show a whole digitized book in one thumbnail? Modern books have illustrated covers, but in research collections the cover is often a plain library binding. So I made Flipbook: hover over a book from any #IIIF source and flip through its pages. hadro.github.io/flipbook/ #GLAMsky 📚📜

The thing about the florid apocalypticism you sometimes encounter on this site is that a lot of people are less horrified by literal civilizational collapse than by the notion that our descendents are just going to keep muddling through and in less than a century nobody will remember us.

You could also think of this as the Sherlock Holmes fallacy. Holmes' method only works because God (the author) is in on it. When you try it in real life, it's usually impossible to narrow the possible truths down to one certain one. And I've cut myself on Occam's razor so many times.

I think a lot about DEVS, the Garland series about a tech company working on a computer that can so perfectly extrapolate from a set of given data that it can predict the future. I think that's the basic error at the heart of the AI cult

My understanding about Google Books is that it began as an honest "don't be evil"-era attempt to digitize all texts and make them searchable. Now I'm wondering if it was LLM fodder all along or if that was the pivot they did after they found out about copyright protections

Finally, in her latest (and best book) The Last Temptation of Beck, she uses the artist as a lens through which to view the disillusionment of the 90s and the culmination of a half-century's worth of men attempting their own desperate reinvention.

Through Vince McMahon and Ringmaster, she detailed the rocket-fueled rise of the cocaine 80s, an era that redefined the romantic ideal of the American ultra-businessman. Muscly, lathered in baby oil, and in the stage light glow, it was intoxicating.

To me, @josie.zone's trilogy of biographies has served as a chronicle of culture in the last half of the twentieth century. Through Stan Lee in True Believer, she dove into how counter culture became commerce and how creators' lives became just as big of legends as their comic books.

Just discovered this lo-fi fitbit
It looks like it was a prop on Dr Who circa 1981. It's just a trapezodal block with 4 lights (ha) and 4 switches. Each light has a little label with glyphs representing: meds, food, exercise, stretching. When you do the activity you flip a switch. Your reward is when all the lights are on, they do a little twinkle dance. That's it that's the whole device
