If you get a sudden and overwhelming urge to write and read papers on taxonomic nomenclature, your brain has unfortunately probably learned that this is an acceptable procrastination technique. Do the other thing instead.

Big new @adriftlab.bsky.social paper - we show for the first time that plastics affects seabirds at the POPULATION level. Plastic ingested as a chick reduces recruitment of birds to the breeding population. And the story is pretty grim. 🧵 www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

An infographic showing a U.S. COVID-19 Heat Map dated July 20, 2026, based on the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative (PMC) Model utilizing CDC wastewater data.
The image features a colour-coded map of the United States displaying regional infectious prevalence estimates across various counties.
The colour scale legend indicates five tiers of CDC Relative Levels and PMC Prevalence Estimates:
•	Very Low (Light Green): <0.9% actively infectious
•	Low (Muted Green): 1.2% (range 0.9–1.5%)
•	Moderate (Orange): 2.0% (range 1.5–2.4%)
•	High (Red): 2.9% (range 2.4–3.5%)
•	Very High (Purple): >3.5% actively infectious
Most of the U.S. map is shaded in shades of green. Prominent cluster hotspots marked in red and purple are located heavily across Texas and extending into western Louisiana, as well as distinct localized clusters in Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada.
Text below the map explicitly outlines 8 major hotspots, highlighting severe outbreaks across Texas and transmission metrics in Hardin county.
An infographic titled "National COVID-19 Estimates (U.S.)" dated July 20, 2026, from the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative (PMC) model website, pmc19.com. The data is structured into three main categories with alternating light blue row highlights:
Infections
•	Proportion Actively Infectious: 1 in 243 (0.4%)
•	New Daily Infections: 202,000
•	Infections the Past Week: 1,340,000
•	Infections in 2026: 87,000,000
•	Cumulative Infections per Person: 5.34
Long COVID
•	Long COVID Cases Resulting from New Daily Infections: 10,000 to 40,000
•	Long COVID Cases Resulting from New Weekly Infections: 67,000 to 270,000
Excess Deaths
•	Excess Deaths Resulting from New Daily Infections: 50 to 90
•	Excess Deaths Resulting from New Weekly Infections: 300 to 600
An infographic titled "COVID-19 State Prevalence Estimates" dated July 20, 2026, from the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative (PMC) model at pmc19.com. It displays data for U.S. states and territories from Alabama to Mississippi alphabetically.
The table features columns tracking state name, CDC level, PMC estimate of active infections, and statistical transmission probabilities ("Chances anyone is infectious") inside rooms containing 10, 25, 50, or 100 people.
Most rows list a "Very Low" or "Low" CDC Level with active infection ranges from 0.1% to 1.2%. Notably, Guam stands out highlighted in bright red with a High CDC level, reporting an active infection rate of 1 in 36 (2.8%). In a room of 100 people in Guam, the chart indicates a 94% chance that someone is actively infectious. Asterisks next to Arkansas and Mississippi indicate limited data reporting, and the footer notes that the source data was last updated on July 11.
An infographic titled "COVID-19 State Prevalence Estimates" dated July 20, 2026, from the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative (PMC) model at pmc19.com. It lists data for U.S. states and territories from Missouri to Wyoming alphabetically.
The table fields track state name, CDC level, PMC estimate of active infections, and transmission probabilities ("Chances anyone is infectious") inside rooms of 10, 25, 50, or 100 people.
Most rows list a "Very Low" or "Low" CDC Level. Texas stands out with a Moderate CDC level, reporting an active infection rate of 1 in 61 (1.6%). In a room of 100 people in Texas, the chart indicates an 81% chance that someone is actively infectious. Asterisks note limited reporting for states like Montana, New York, and Oklahoma. A footer indicates that data for North Dakota averages values from Minnesota, Montana, and South Dakota, with Puerto Rico tracking via its own dashboard. Data was last updated on July 11.
