Crikey. Even bulldogs were once proper dogs. Feel sorry for the modern ones I see now, and for all the snuffling flat-faced breeds. Staffie crosses for me, though ours was formally a dog-home foundling whatever, though clearly half staffie. Find modern dog breeding absurd & creepy.

"I've worked all my life and paid into my pension and now it's being taken away from me" NOT TRUE! There is no giant pension fund. What you paid in for all those years paid your parent's and grandparent's pensions. The youngsters of today are paying your pension. State pension IS a benefit.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about Terry Pratchett's "Reaper Man" and AI. He was so ahead of his time in so many ways - or maybe squarely in his time but so many missed the very obvious signposts of where we were heading. Gonna be spoilers in this thread for a 25-year old book.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

Security services are still trying to gather information on a potential huge terrorist incident. This is a critical time for them. Nigel Farage is publicly criticising them for not releasing information. He knows the law, he knows they cannot. He is palpably unfit for public office.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.
