Lots of Willow Emerald laying eggs into the stems of Grey Willow tonight despite a completely dried out pond. The female cuts tiny slits into the stem and deposits her eggs inside. Just need some rain now for the gamble to pay off! #Dragonflies #Wildlife #Ecology @britishdragonflies.bsky.social

Coombe Hill Meadows Glos. today - 20+ Migrant Hawker (one pair being harassed by a Willow Emerald Damselfly), unfortunately one of the females was caught and eaten by a Moorhen! There were at least 15 Willow Emerald Damselfly including at least two teneral. @britishdragonflies.bsky.social

A very elderly #dragonfly that I saw yesterday at East Wichel. Female Common Darters start out yellow and turn brown when they get old. Sometimes a really old one will start to turn red - this is about as red as I've ever seen one. #UKWildlife #invertebrates #insects

I visited @scotwildlife.bsky.social's Milkhall Pond wildlife reserve y'day. There in spirit Nev. Common Darters, Sympetrum striolatum, males sitting around then flying out to catch prey and returning to the same spot, pairs in cop and a pair ovipositing. @britishdragonflies.bsky.social

Southern Hawkers do often try to lay eggs away from the edge of the pond, including into hard surfaces like plastic pond liners. Shoes aren't all that common as a target, though.

A big thank you to @jo-the-botanist.bsky.social & Richard Carter for stepping in and leading today's @norfolknats.bsky.social wildflower walk at Roydon Common. We had a productive walk through both wet and dry habitats, highlights included Oblong-leaved Sundew, Bog Asphodel and Cranberry.

It is usually the male Southern Hawker that I see, pausing from his restless patrolling of a woodland path to hover in front of me curiously, impossible to ‘snap’, but the beautifully marked female is easier - this one ovipositing in a heat-dried pool at #OldLodgeNR @britishdragonflies.bsky.social
