It's very strange. I've seen it behaving as a v definite weed; but its also starting to pop up in dune-slack vegetation in E Anglia which means that soon enough we won't know if the relict dune slack populations are the old quiescent ones or the new and vigorous ones. And does it matter? Discuss....

On a rare trip south, I was thrilled to be given a tour of the Cotoneasters of Cherry Hinton by #BSBIViceCountyRecorder Lucy Wilson! Learnt so much about this intimidating group of non-native shrubs (see alt-text), and actually looking forward to my next encounter with a weird one for a change 😂
Photo collage of Cotoneasters in Cherry Hinton chalk pits - four rows of three photos, described from top to bottom (each row left to right):
C. lacteus (Late), C. bradyi (Brady's), C. insculptus (Engraved)
C. salicifolius (Willow-leaved), C. x watereri (Waterer's), C. amoenus (Beautiful)
C. dammeri (Bearberry), C. divaricatus (Spreading), C. x suecicus (Swedish)

When Lucy from Compass Books in Dartmouth, Devon, was victim to shoplifting people told her to install CCTV. Instead she put this ancient book thief curse on the wall from the Monastery of San Pedro in Barcelona so book stealers would be consumed by "the flames of hell" with "their members blasted".
A Curse Against Stealers Of Books
For him that
stealth a book from
this place, let it
change into a
serpent in his hand
and rend him.
Let him be struck with
palsy,
& all his members
blasted.
Let him languish in
pain crying aloud for
mercy, & let there be be no surcease to his
agony till he sink to
dissolution.
Let bookworms gnaw
his entrails in token of
the Worm that diets not,
& when at last he
goeth to his final
punishment, let the
flames of
hell consume him
forever & aye.

Really beautiful- I especially like the idea of using 'shed' parts of plants such as alder cones. Wondering now if it's possible to dye fabric/yarn with non-native invasives... apparently Japanese knotweed gives yellow/green/ ochre/pink depending on the plant part used & pH. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Tall Rocket on recently cleared sand dune at Par Sands, Cornwall today. See ALT for evidence of its long-lived seed. Sisymbrium altissimum
Recorded here in 1901, 1910, then 1929 and nothing until 2025 when the dunes were cleared of scrub back to bare sand. Hundreds of S. altissimum then appeared evidencing a long-lived seed bank. They'll probably disappear again as the dunes vegetate over.

Solvitur ambulando is my favourite Latin phrase. It means "it is solved by walking". (Info in alt text.)
A photograph I took quite early on New Year's Day, 2019, while walking on the Isle of Purbeck during the research for my book Ring The Hill, not long before I did a tweet using the photo and this same caption. I imagine it won't have as much impact here, since loads of people have since reused it, and the phrase is now more widely known. It is still very very true, though. Lots of things are solved by walking. Although not everything, obviously.

May I remind everyone that there is currently NO cure for rabies. May I also remind everyone there is absolutely NO scientific proof connecting ANY vaccine that we produce today with autism. This is true regarding vaccination in both humans AND in dogs. Vaccinate your pets please.
Worries about vaccination rates in dogs
As rabies seems to be spreading more in wildlife, veterinarians are especially worried about vaccine hesitancy spreading among pet owners, a dangerous trend that could lead to more dogs - and their owners
- becoming infected. A 2023 study published in the journal Vaccine found in nationally representative
sample of Americans that nearly 40% believed canine vaccines were unsafe and 37% believed that vaccines could lead their dogs to develop cognitive issues, such as autism.
