The Grasshoppers and Bush Crickets get most of the Orthopteran glory, but look at this for camouflage from a common groundhopper nestled in the friable soils of a dry pond base. These are overlooked for the big green things but are fascinating little insects too. #Camouflage #Ecology

No luck getting Nathusius Pipistrelle at Wykeham Lakes last night. But plenty of activity with good numbers of Noctule, Daubenton's bat, Soprano Pipistrelle and Common Pipistrelle noted. #bats @batconservation.bsky.social

A look around a pond margin today, produced Idiocerus lituratus (a hopper on willows), Cinchbug (loves Reed Sweet Grass), Limnephilus vittatus (Caddis of open based ponds) & Pherbina coryleti (a snail killing fly) #niches #diversity. @teamneyedc.bsky.social @freshwaterhabitats.bsky.social

Increasingly dry summers, encroachment of reed, willow and invasives like Crassula are hastening the loss of our ponds. Despite this still some breeding success with GC Newts (like this juv) hanging on at a local site I study. Long lived so just need occassional wet springs. @froglife.bsky.social

Nice start to the day on my Scarborough patch. First couple of Bramblings of the autumn. Good finch movement of linnets, goldfinch, greenfinch, chaffinch. 40 Robins, a few chiffchaff and increasing numbers of these fine grey 'continental' song thrushes coming across the sea. @nybirdnews.bsky.social

In early autumn, Common Toads begin moving back towards their ponds. After breeding, they wander and feed, often hundreds of metres away. They then return towards wintering areas, hibernating closer to the pond to reduce spring travel. #Ecology @argroupsuk.bsky.social @arc-trust.bsky.social

Nice seawatch yesterday evening. 3 Arctic Skua, 16 Red-throated Divers, a Great Skua inshore mobbing the Gannets. Steady tern passage mainly arctics north. Ducks moving with common scoter, teal and wigeon plus lapwing battling across the waves. @nybirdnews.bsky.social @longnabbirder.bsky.social

Last night a light southerly produced my latest Noc-Mig Common Sandpiper plus 5 Snipe, 5 Dunlin & 2 Song Thrush. Late September Dunlin are typically alpina birds from Fennoscandia & Russia, which is likely where the Snipe and Sandpiper originated from too. #Birds #Noc-Mig #Migration

So much Soprano Pipistrelle activity in the garden during these warm September nights. Lots of social calls (type D) mixed in with the usual 55khz calls, with the onset of breeding. A reliable feature of late season batting. #bats #wildlife #ecology @batconservation.bsky.social

Iceland is moving to end commercial whaling permanently. That would leave just Japan & Norway as the 2 nations which legally allow whaling uk.whales.org/2026/09/11/i...

Wonderful to see Pink-footed Geese now arriving from Iceland and eastern Greenland, with plenty seen during the day, but these geese frequently migrate south through Britain at night as well. I10 Flocks so far going over the house during the past week or so. #Noc-Mig #Birds #Migration

Lots of Willow Emerald laying eggs into the stems of Grey Willow tonight despite a completely dried out pond. The female cuts tiny slits into the stem and deposits her eggs inside. Just need some rain now for the gamble to pay off! #Dragonflies #Wildlife #Ecology @britishdragonflies.bsky.social
