64 years ago, on the 27th of September 1962, Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring was published. It handled the environmental harm caused by the pesticide DDT and the disinformation spread by the chemical industry. Carson managed to sway public opinion and even policy. #otd #history 🗃️

I haven’t been out in my kayak for a while but the light was so beautiful and the water so calm yesterday I headed out for a paddle. Didn’t see the bluefin tuna that have been seen around but it was lovely being on the water. #kayaking

Good news! Sandilands, a former golf course on the Lincolnshire coast, has been transformed by the National Trust into a 2km-long nature reserve with wetlands, wading pools, rough grassland & coastal scrub. Fairways and bunkers were turned into shallow pools and islands for shore and marsh birds.

Good news! Dorset’s #seagrass meadows are recovering thanks to “eco moorings” designed to prevent the seabed being ripped up. Seagrass meadows are one of the world’s most valuable ecosystems- as well as supporting creatures such as seahorses, they store carbon & help protect coastlines from erosion.

Lovely! A diminutive wild cat that inhabits Bolivia’s ⁠cloud forest has been identified as a previously unknown species. The cat, called Tilcayo by local communities. It measures about 18in long and weighs about 3lbs making it smaller than the average domestic ⁠cat. #wildcats

Good news! The 2,500 farmers across England who applied for grants to restore and maintain their mature #hedgerows using a craft that dates back thousands of years, will – if the grants are approved – lay 800 miles of mature hedgerows, enough to stretch from Land’s End to Hadrian’s Wall and back.
