We marked the occasion yesterday by visiting the tapestry exhibition @britishmuseum.bsky.social. Despite the long queue once inside it is very moving to be able to see this great treasure laid flat and to appreciate the building sense of drama, including the tale of destruction in the bottom border.

My suggestion for an illustration for James Marriott’s important column in today’s @thetimes.com, which ends with highlighting the risks of overconfidence and arrogance. The French word outrecuidance never really took off in English. Perhaps it should now. Here is outrecuidance from The Cloisters NY
Colourful early 16th century tapestry entitled in English Vanity sounds the horn and ignorance unleashes the hounds overconfidence, rashness, and desire. The hound overconfidence (outrecuidance) looks directly at ignorance, who smiles sweetly back.

Why read history? History explains how we got here and challenges what we think we know. And in the case of a #WolfsonHistoryPrize book, it's also a brilliant read. Ahead of next week's shortlist announcement, our judges reflect on the value of reading history.

And here is nearby Skellig Michael 9 days ago, home between the 6th and 8th centuries to a small group of monks who lived in the individual “beehive” cells, some of the remains of which are just visible. An extraordinary insight into early monasticism. The gannets prefer Little Skellig.

The Irish Dames of the #Benedictine Abbey at Ypres, founded 1665, had strong #Jacobite links. Some of them attended James II’s funeral in 1701. This copy of the funeral oration is one of their few surviving treasures when their abbey was bombed in 1914. Since 1920 their home is at tranquil Kylemore.

'What’s the value of a History PhD? A view from business' bit.ly/4elv1cW In this new post, Richard Marks charts the skills gained from completing a doctorate. From project design & management to data retrieval & analysis, History PhDs bring capacity and experience that are in demand #Skystorians
Opening page of RHS blog post: 'What’s the value of a History PhD? A view from business'. Full abstract:

"In this post we hear from Dr Richard Marks, a former business analyst who, having completed a PhD in 2024, now works as an independent historical researcher and author. After a long career outside education, Richard’s experience both of business and PhD research means he’s well placed to identify the broader skills History PhDs acquire while designing and studying for a doctorate. In creating and completing a PhD, you’re gaining capacity in project design and management, data retrieval and analysis, as well as engagement with varied audiences. Such skills are central to professions beyond higher education and highly valued by employers. Richard was one of 25 researchers who attended a recent workshop for independent historians, organised by the Royal Historical Society and held at the University of Warwick in May 2026."
