The whole "small boats" issue is a problem created out of thin air by successive right wing governments and amplified by a racist media who don't want a single brown person in this country. It's so simple it fits in one post and I can add this sentence too.

It’s this learned helplessness, this weak insipidity in the face of fascistic oligarchic takeover, that INFURIATES centre-left voters. It’s almost gas-lighting. The same is true of mainstream Democrats. Where is your FIGHT, damn it all? Why vote for you if you won’t govern?

The snobbishness about this comes in part from the fact you can no longer pay all your bills doing a minimum wage job. If you work 35hrs a week you should be able to pay rent, pay utilities, buy food & have a little left over for a few beers on a Friday. This never used to be a controversial view.

The "stop the boats" movement is being driven by the type of English suburban racist who thinks that one black family living in their street is one too many. Yes, it really is as simple as that, and it has been for decades. There is no intellectual depth to this stuff. It is pure, distilled hate.

I just think the point at which somebody turns up with a private army of masked paramilitary goons to intimidate the press - yes, even if it *is* The Mail - is the point at which you can safely call it terrorism and start, I dunno, making a few arrests?

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Well, How 'Bout That?
Alt: Close-up of Frank N Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show with the caption "Well, How 'Bout That?". In the gif the camera is zoomed in on the face of Tim Curry as Frank N Furter as he changes his expression from pouted lips to an open mouthed smile with raised eyebrow. Frank N Furter has black curly hair, pale foundation, dark eyeshadow and dark red lipstick. My mum and dad let me watch this film when I was 2 and subsequently had some very difficult questions to answer when I sang songs from it in front of my very restrained and proper grandma. Kids, eh?

"Say goodbye to all of this... and hello to oblivion!" 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' made its debut in UK cinemas on this day in 1975.
The "Distracted Boyfriend" meme, but the boyfriend is now Brad Majors from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (1975). The object of his attention is Dr. Frank N. Furter, who, I'm led to believe, is just a sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania. Brad's girlfriend, Janet Weiss, doesn't look too happy with Brad, but I reckon she'd quite like a go on Frank herself.

Something to bear in mind as things get harder, from a 2009 Metafilter post from someone who lives through Sarajevo.
Metafilter post from Dee Extrovert part 1: Well, unlike the majority of you (l assume), 1 actually lived several years in a period of savagery and killing, during which nothing - food, water, electricity, phone, clothing, sense of safety, school, the ability to go out in public, etc - was available, except during totally unpredictable, brief and sporadic occasions.
Of those who couldn't leave my city, Sarajevo:
Some people (very few) were prepared for what they thought would be the "long haul" - this tended to be a couple of months. These people were widely seen as lunatics and dangerously pessimistic ones at that.
Most people were not at all prepared. This included my family. Many of those - like my family - considered the idea of "preparation" to be an affront to the decency we felt most people possessed. Were we wrong? Well, I don't know. We suffered greatly; my parents were killed. But speaking only for myself, I never felt I cheapened my soul by betting on calamity.
Today, that still feels like it's worth something.Metafilter post from Dee Extrovert part 2: But here's the main point: "Preparing" for the disaster really didn't do anyone much good. Those who
"prepared" ate a little better for a while. They stayed warmer for a few extra days. They enjoyed the radio for a while longer (via batteries.) But in the end, they ended up hungry, cold and bored too, just like the rest of us. Guns and weapons helped no one directly and were even of little to no use in the defense of Sarajevo, since they were toys compared to the shells, bombs and high-powered armaments of the attacking forces.
The worst parts of war were psychological - the fear, anxiety, boredom, loneliness, paranoia, bad dreams.
Respite from those things came with sharing food with a neighbor, finding a piece of clothing that would fit someone you knew, commiserating with others in your position, figuring out how to make make-up from brick or french fries from wheat paste and spreading this newly-acquired war knowledge around the mahala.
We knew who had extra food and supplies. For the most part, they weren't attacked or hassled or bothered. Contrary to what these survivalists say, those in dire times generally hold on to their personal sense of pride even more than they do in normal times. I'd take a bite of a friend's salad without bothering to ask in normal times. I'd never have done that in wartime, no matter how hungry I was.Metafilter post from Dee Xtrovert: Well, unlike the majority of you (l assume), 1 actually lived several years in a period of savagery and killing, during which nothing - food, water, electricity, phone, clothing, sense of safety, school, the ability to go out in public, etc - was available, except during totally unpredictable, brief and sporadic occasions.
