This splendidly dubious argument was successful. Bunton was “acquitted ... of all charges, except that of theft of the frame of the picture”, which was worth £100, and which he’d lost. He got three months. The Theft Act 1968 made sure nobody could get away with the same defence again

He also got Lord Robbins, chairman of the trustees of the National Gallery, to admit that they hadn’t been “alarmed” by Bunton’s ransom notes—which put paid to the charge of “making demands with menaces”, and that just left theft. This would be tricky, but...
it was 'not a crime in law to remove a picture from an art gallery, provided there was no intention to keep it permanently ... You may think, Jeremy told the jury, 'the law is stupid about this. If someone goes into your house and takes your television set because he wants to watch a football match and then keeps it, it is extremely irritating and annoying but it is not stealing. It is not stealing if you take your neighbour's lawn mower and forget all about it. If at the time the television set or the lawn mower was taken there was no intention of keeping it permanently you may have caused annoyance and intense irritation but it is not theft.

The amount was carefully chosen: it was the price an American oilman had paid for the painting at Sotheby’s the year before, and which the government matched to keep it in the country (with the help of £100,000 from the Wolfson Foundation)

Today is the 64th anniversary of the London premiere of Dr. No, so it’s time for the story of the theft of not one but two portraits of the Duke of Wellington—because Goya’s portrait of him had been nicked from the National Gallery the previous summer, just 19 days after it went on display
Sean Connery in Dr No’s lair, about to go up a short flight of stairs when he spots a portrait of the Duke of Wellington on a stand. The original had been stolen from the National Gallery the previous year, and this was a joke by the Bond production team

Three panel comic. Panel 1: on the set of the Jerry Springer show, a man sits in a chair. Jerry signals off-stage and says, “we have with us: your ancestor who crawled out of the ocean 375 million years ago!” Panel 2: the live studio audience is booing. Panel 3: security attempts to break up a fight between the man on stage, and his ancestor, a tiktaalik.

Many of the super-rich are totally messed up because they can’t trust anyone & they’re right, they shouldn’t
