I voted. The cat did not. The cat cannot be trusted with representative democracy.

Just came out of a lecture on eco-horror that discussed The Southern Reach (@jeffvandermeer.bsky.social) and recommended That Which Moves the Dead (@tkingfisher.com) and Mexican Gothic (@silviamg.bsky.social). All good stuff from @profsandpints.bsky.social.

Alien, with only John Hurt as the only human. He plays the chest-burster (much to Gonzo's dismay) and, eventually, the alien.

If you see this, post a vampire that isn't Dracula.
A black and white image of a man, slicked back hair and a tie. It is Pieter van Dorn, a fact that will mean nothing to anyone but me and a few friends.

Just had this fun result from the new Government AI: >what happened on january 6, 2020 >Many people mean January 6, 2021, when Congress met in a joint session to certify the 2020 Electoral College vote.

Woke up this morning to find that I've just finished 30 years in Government service. That's Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden, and Trump. That's Reno, Ridge, Chertoff, Ashcroft, Gonzales, Mukasey, Holder, Lynch, Sessions, Barr, Garland, Bondi, and Blanche.

Triumphal arches have always had military purposes. The Arch of Titus? Eternal resting place of Legio IX Hispana. The Arc de Triomphe? Command and control for the Force de frappe. Arch of Triumph in Pyongyang? Kaiju tomb.

Just finished @willdalrymple.bsky.social's Return of a King, on the First Anglo-Afghan war. It should have been required reading for every field officer in the U.S. forces in Afghanistan. A wonderfully told tale of a woefully incompetent invasion and even worse retreat.

In DC, the smoke from the Pentagon was frequently misinterpreted as coming from other places. So I remember earnest reporting that the State Department had been hit, that car bombs were going off on the Mall. Then they sent us all home and told the Metro to shut down.

Came into the office after a long weekend and there was a book on my desk. Not I book I had placed there. A book on Russian and Soviet disinformation. OK, that's odd, but certainly an area of interest. I open it up. There's an inscription, from a co-author, to me.
