On Jacob Geller

I'm aware of the rape allegations against Jacob Geller, as well as the fact that his name is on a court-ordered list of UNC students disciplined for sexual violence. I've hesitated on whether to post anything about it, because the victim hasn’t been identified and I don’t want to participate in a retraumatizing conversation against their wishes. At the same time, as someone who has collaborated with Jacob Geller, I do not want my silence to be taken as endorsement.

For my part, I did not know about this and I wish I had. What justice and repair look like in cases like these are for the victim to decide, and I do not know their wishes or what accountability processes, if any, took place. However, strictly on a personal level, I’m uncomfortable having collaborated with someone who has presented himself as a nonthreatening feminist without ever disclosing his history of sexual violence to me or any other colleagues I’ve spoken to. I have no intention of ever working with Geller again. Beyond that, the person this happened to ought to be the ultimate authority on what happens next, and how they wish to tell their story if at all.

Some of my favorite pages from Luxury Ball (2016)

Cover of the Luxury Ball zine. Roselia in a flowing formal gown, sitting on a pokeball, with the words “Luxury Ball” in aggressively loopy cursive.

James from the Pokemon anime in heels and a strapless sequin dress, sitting on top of his partner Weezing.

Deoxys in its speed an attack forms. Deoxys speed wears a form-fitting romper with a cape, Deoxys attack wears pearl earrings and tiara and a flowing single-shoulder dress.

Sableye wears a cowl dress and several jeweled accessories. She’s sitting on top of a Probobass, who seems unbothered.

I love genius annotations.

A genius dot com annotation for the flea market montgomery rap that says "Sammy is comparing the flea market to the likes of a mini mall, which implies that the flea market is of higher quality than its competitors"

Ray Smuckles in goth garb presses a button on his skull codpiece, which makes it utter the words "BELA... LUGOSI'S... DEAD..."

The random encounters discourse will lead to "If you don't like the gameplay, then don't play the game" which will lead to "If you only want to enjoy the story, then just watch it on youtube" which will lead to "You can be a fan of a game series without playing any of it"

A pro-union game journalist would be explaining the history of Japanese labor unions & strikes to readers. Telling them this is why no one at Nintendo can be easily fired. Instead we get this limp dick "I wish Iwata saved us all 😭" demobilizing nonsense

These things really bother me because games journalists are always saying they're pro-union. Well, Japan's game industry doesn't has mass layoffs because of the work of labor unions! Of strikes! But here we are, rewriting that history into "Japanese CEOs are nicer". Kill the neoliberal inside you.

Real talk, why half of the remaining games media is in Japan this week but no one can ever find a Japanese dev, consultant, journo or researcher to talk about Japan? Especially when we then get these experts who ignore the well-know fact that Japan has laws which make firing people extremely hard.
