I'm 51 years of age, and for all my adult life, the one constant in politics is 'we need to talk about immigration'. Could we try just try shutting the fuck up about it, actually?

I find myself thinking about historian Robert Paxton’s 2004 definition of fascism far too often than I’d like these days. Note that these sentences were written back when Donald Trump was a NYC playboy libertine who donated to Democrats.
Fascism may be defined as a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation, or victim-hood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy, and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legalrestraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion.

A short thread with some thoughts on the Paris Noir exhibition at the Pompidou, which we went to see last night. Great artwork, but I'd love to see a "counter-narrative" commissioned for the same exhibition, because to my mind they left out everything that's most interesting about the theme.

These are kids who will never pay taxes, despite huge wealth. They’ll never hold a job daddy didn’t get them. They’ll buy their own MLB team. They’ll never go on a date with someone non-rich. They’ll never clean their own toilet. We have to recognise the ultra-rich are doing this to their children.

To generalise, I find that people on the centre left are acutely, even excessively, aware of forces they don't like on the left while too many people on the centre right are oblivious to threats from the right until it's far too late and they have to write essays about how dumb they've been

The role of the Labour party in the British political psyche is essentially Mum: she's naff & boring, never accomplished anything, only ever tries to stop being as cool as we could be. Meanwhile all the laundry that was folded, the meals that were cooked & the home that was clean go unseen.

The reason a lot of very poor countries have higher tariffs is in part because they lack the state capacity to collect other taxes, or the affluent citizens to pay them. It's easier logistically to collect revenue at a few border crossings than from every business or employee in the country.

I have been contemplating this all day. There is a way to botch a government takeover and instead wind up with no government. It’s one of the more unusual outcomes in a situation like this, BUT! Our guys are uniquely unqualified to attempt this kind of power grab, so — it’s on the table.
