Israel’s Response to Oct. 7 Has Made It Less Secure
Israel has internalized one lesson from the attacks of Oct. 7: that no one within striking distance must ever be able to do it harm.

The bitter but predictable irony of Israel's response to the Oct. 7 attack is that the only state that now poses less of a security threat to Israel is the one where a secular dictator was replaced by an avowed jihadist.

I think part of the problem is that, in seeking to firewall against Nazism since WWII, we created a vacuum in knowledge about Hitler that leaves space for this sort of idiocy. The best antidote to these people would be greater popular familiarity with what a freak and loser Hitler really was.

For 20 years, successive French govts and demagogues have tried to vilify, demonize and silence young women like her. And here she is calling them out in the name of her France. This photo documents France's greatest failures, but also its greatest successes that it in many ways does not deserve.

Macron is another one whose appeal was the perception that he alone could hold back Le Pen. And yet, under his presidency the French state has repressed with ultra-violence the Gilets Jaunes, the pension reform protests and now the lycéens. With a center like that, who needs the far right?

Evening soundtrack. Great upbeat swinging session backed by Oliver Nelson's band of the time, with some great song selection. The liner notes include the only flat-out disses (of Curtis' and Nelson's tenor solos on this track) that I've ever seen printed on a record sleeve.

Every now and then I read something to the tune of: "Word to your moms, I'm here to drop bombs, I got more rhymes than the Bible's got psalms." This was one of those times.
This is emphatically not to posit a feminist ‘conflict-free’ utopia, nor to argue that feminist critiques necessarily take precedence over other emancipatory discourses, nor to claim that gender hierarchy is always the most salient dimension of oppressive dynamics. It is to argue that feminist voices offer alternative visions; that gender domination is not reducible to some other form and, therefore, that ‘progressive’ movements must also be feminist movements; and that, whilenot always the most salient, gender is always a dimension of oppressive relations and ‘taking it seriously’ improves our critical understanding and possibilities for change. In sum, insofar as denigration of the feminine serves to naturalize (depoliticize) all manner of oppressive relations, we cannot eliminate oppression until we eliminate the hierarchical gender dichotomy that sustains it.

These are the 20th and 21st paragraphs of a story titled "Superpowers Race to Put Nuclear Reactors on the Moon" www.nytimes.com/2026/10/04/w...
Target dates have repeatedly slipped, and few experts expect the countries to meet their deadlines. Nobody has a proven lander that can lower heavy, potentially radioactive material onto bumpy lunar terrain. Nobody has ever installed a reactor in low gravity.

The moon bases have not been built, and how much electricity they would need is open to speculation. That is why experts say that all or parts of the reactor designs could change.

Great thread about a 15-yr trend of increasing police violence against protesters in France, worth reading in translation if necessary. To my mind, it also explains why so many French protest movements, from the Gilets Jaunes to the student protests today, have so quickly been radicalized.

Like the anti-woke backlash of which it's part, the whole "campuses as hotbeds of left-wing radicalism" discourse willfully confuses the noise for the signal. Most people go for a job credential and leave deeply socialized into the protocols of power, of which violence against women is central.
