Behold my manatea.
A silicone tea infuser in the shape of a manatee (or dugong; I’m unclear of the difference). It’s pale duck egg blue and smiling. Its front limbs are hooked over the edge of a white mug; the rest of it has small holes for brewing purposes, then its tail is again solid. It comes apart just below its armpits (finpits? Flipperpits?) for filling and emptying.

Criminally, this was not sold as a “manatea”. Do better, marketers.

The second best phrase I’ve heard for very warm weather is from the US South and goes “it’s hotter than two hamsters fucking in a wool sock.” And the best phrase I’ve heard is from Afrikaans and goes die hond die kat jaag, maar beide loop. It means “the dog is chasing the cat, but both are walking.”

Happy International Tea Day! My favourite phrase for when given a non-full cup of tea is “are you expecting stormy weather?” And my favourite phrase for when given a cup of tea that isn’t strong enough is “that tea’s as strong as a fortnight.“

My favourite Finnish one is "Ei menny niin kuin Strömsössä" [Didn't go like in Strömsö]. STRÖMSÖ is a Finland-Swedish TV show where they cook and craft and everything's so easy-breezy and lovely and quaint and always goes according to plan, presenting this Finland-Swedish utopistic way of existence

The word narwhal is apparently derived from the Icelandic náhvalur. Nár is dead human body, hvalur is whale. It’s said it’s because medieval sources describe náhvalur using their enormous tooth to eat men who had died at sea. Or, that the gray, pasty skin of náhvalur recalls that of a dead body.

The jogger
Decades ago I hit a jogger in my car on the way to an interview.

A dilemma:

Not be late for the interview

Or stop to help the jogger?

I decided getting a job was more important.

With career success I could help hundreds of joggers.

Guess who was interviewing me when I showed up?

It was the jogger.

He told me what happened and asked "what would you do if you were driving the car?"

I said "screw the interview, I'd help the jogger."

He hired me on the spot.

Always tell the interviewer what they want to hear.

The Thai word for a praying mantis, ตั๊กแตนตำข้าว, means "rice-pounding grasshopper." And the Navajo word, naakaii náásééł, means "Mexicans are coming as a mob." This may come from an old belief that if you ask a praying mantis where the Mexicans are coming from, it will point in the correct direction.

In 2008 The Committee for Mammal Names proposed changing the name to 'tikutaku'. Chip 'n' Dale - probably the world's best-known chipmunks - are called Tiku and Taku in Finnish. However, Institute for the Languages of Finland rejected the proposal.

It's more like "goat of the sky", or if you want to wax more poetic, "heaven's goat" (since "taivas" means both the concrete blue sky, and the more esoterically-loaded heaven).

A tribal chief retired and his people bought a stone throne to go in his mud hut as thanks for his kind rule. There wasn't room below so he built a mezzanine for it. The rains came, the mud melted and the throne fell and killed him. The moral: people who live in grass houses shouldn't stow thrones.
