And to support this thesis, the author ignores that the UC system consists of three different tiers of institutions, each with a distinct mission. Not everyone needs to, or should, go to Cal, UCLA, UCSD, etc.

I can't respond to this in the comments, so instead: I'm not telling anyone how to vote. I am explaining what strategic voting consists of. "Is" ≠ "should" You want to hand the election to someone who is hellbent on destroying you, bc the other candidate is "wishy washy"? Your choice.

The essence of strategic voting isn't holding out for the choice that perfectly matches your preferences, but voting for the one less likely to harm the people and policies you want to protect.

Institutional neutrality should NOT be an attack on academic freedom or free speech. Such policies require that university officials not speak on political or social matters *on behalf of the university.* Individuals can express their *own* views at will!

Political reasons for tenure denials are a violation of faculty governance and academic freedom The best part? The president (Jim Davis) is himself not an academic, and got tenure not as a result of a formal review, but pro forma from the Board of Regents as part of his hiring contract

Some things to note about Putin's potential plans in Poland: a) there have been several attacks on infrastructure/ incursions, and both Poland and NATO kept their cool b) if Putin is smart, he'll stick with a plausibly deniable bigger attack on infrastructure: that's a gray area for NATO

I mean, suborning science by politics usually works out well. Just ask the beneficiaries of Lysenkoism and anti-sparrow campaigns, the forced study of dialectical materialism and scientific Marxism, Soviet psychiatry, or late-communist era blood transfusions.

Communist regimes in the 1940/50s battled what they saw as “alien anti-communist agitators,” traitors trained and paid up by the West. Autocratic regimes can never quite believe their opposition is sincere, popular, and intense

Exactly right. Popes were far more invested in politics historically, from Gregory VII asserting Church autonomy to Boniface VIII insisting on a role in French politics (oops) to Julius II going after the Borgias and leading armies in battle. 20th century popes are anodyne in comparison
