if there is one graphic I could get people who are trying to get folks to take any kinds of political action to look at, it's this one. if the goal is action, and you are cultivating feelings in the left hand column with your messaging, you are shooting yourself in the foot.
inertia is overcome by urgency
apathy is overcome by anger
fear is overcome by hope
isolation is overcome by solidarity
self-doubt is overcome by proof of agency

today a friend who mostly knows Pepper from the dog park got to visit her at home, and see her in calm hosting mode. she said it's the first time she's been able to see the colour of pep's eyes, because at the park pep exists mostly as a very fast happy blur.

Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

Why do people with ME claim to know more about the medical aspects of their disease than their doctors? Because the mechanisms that usually ensure doctors' knowledge fail in the case of ME, and sick people have created mechanisms of knowledge production and dissemination to pick up the slack.

How many Masters and PhD researchers on a living wage would 1 km of this road pay for per year? *1,173* There are 11 km of the road. On average it takes 4 years to do a PhD in Aotearoa and about 2 years to do a Masters. So, 2,346 PhDs and 1,173 Masters degrees properly paid while doing research.

If you took the $800 million National want to spend on 11km of road and shared it equally between all South Island Councils they'd each get $38 million to spend on roads which would have a wider net positive on roads than 11km of north Christchurch highway.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

I believe fraternity hazing and military hazing and sports team hazing where men abuse each other is acclimating them into a broader culture of abuse where they will then believe it is their right to abuse other more vulnerable people. It’s so insidious. And that’s also why I think men defend it

This is the thing from the WHATWG HTML standard I am referring to. Source: html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/im...
The most general rule to consider when writing alternative text is the following: [begin bold text] the intent is that replacing every image with the text of its alt attribute does not change the meaning of the page. [end bold text]

So, in general, alternative text can be written by considering what one would have written had one not been able to include the image.

A corollary to this is that the alt attribute's value should never contain text that could be considered the image's caption, title, or legend. It is supposed to contain replacement text that could be used by users instead of the image; it is not meant to supplement the image. The title attribute can be used for supplemental information.

"The incident fits a broader pattern in the the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel cultue': whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship. When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behavior. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised."
