Nihar Shah did a heroic experiment for TMLR: he spent 20-25 hours over two weeks interviewing authors of seemingly low-quality submissions about their own papers. He confirmed what we all suspected: people submitting these papers have *no idea* what is going on in them.

As for the evidence, the author draws on all sorts of stuff in the book, mainly contemporary history and literature. But he introduces his thesis by referencing this figure, which purports to show politicisation and institutionalisation over time.

I’ve always thought it was too bad that the Game Theory Society gave ownership of GEB to Academic Press when it was founded as opposed to retaining ownership themselves. The fact that it and the JET belonged to commercial publishers the main reason we started Theoretical Economics.

With additional PM2.5 data through 1000Z today, I think we can safely say that this is the most impactful wildfire smoke event in recent history -- around 41.3 million people have been exposed to at least one hour of Hazardous PM2.5 & the number of person-hours spent in Hazardous range is now 368.9m
