🌍 A new #JAERE study asks: does carbon removal replace cutting emissions? No. Modeling direct air capture, ocean alkalinity enhancement & iron fertilization shows the optimal carbon price barely moves — but net emissions can turn negative, easing peak warming. 📊 #JaereFigureFriday 📈 #Econsky
Six-panel line graph showing CDR deployment in GtC/yr, the social cost of
carbon in USD/tCO2, gross and net emissions in GtC/yr, atmospheric carbon concen-tration in GtC, and temperature increase in °C from 2020 to 2200. DACCS and OAE deployment increase strongly after mid-century, reaching about 8–10 GtC/yr each by 2200, while OIF remains below about 0.5 GtC/yr throughout. Relative to the scenario without CDR, combined CDR leads to net-negative emissions, lower atmospheric carbon concentrations, and lower temperature increases by 2200. Differences in gross emissions and the social cost of carbon remain comparatively small.

The EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) doesn't just curb carbon leakage. It may recruit other countries into carbon pricing!🤝 A new #JAERE paper finds the CBAM cuts EU leakage from 40% to 15%. 📊 #JaereFigureFriday 📈📉 #Econsky
A waterfall plot. It consists in a big black bar on the left side (initial emissions), with
smaller bars stacked side by side showing changes in emissions in each country compared to the baseline. The small bars cumulate to another bar on the right, which shows the emissions in the counterfactual emissions. A horizontal line shows how much emissions are reduced in the coalition countries (EU, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan) compared to the baseline (953 MtCO2) and another line shows how much emissions are reduced in total (691 MtCO2). The difference between these two numbers correspond to the contribution of non-coalition countries to the change in emissions (691).

🌡️ New #JAERE research asks: how well do common temperature proxies (nearest monitor, PRISM) match true station readings? Not well — the resulting biases range from -30% to +300% in a temperature–crime application, and fixed effects can make the bias worse 📉 #JaereFigureFriday 📈 #Econsky
👉 Figure 1 breaks the error into its three sources — using the nearest monitor instead of your actual location (row 1), computing the daily mean as (max+min)/2 instead of hourly averages (row 2), and sorting temperatures into bins (row 3) — and then combines them (row 4). In short, the proxies squeeze the extremes toward the middle — hot days read too cool 🔥⬇️, cold days too warm ❄️⬆️. The models built to detect extreme-temperature effects (binned regressions, splines) suffer the most, since that's where the errors are biggest.

💡A rural electrification push that ended up protecting forests?🌳 New research in #JAERE finds that rural electrification in Brazil slowed deforestation by nudging farmers 👨‍🌾 away from land-intensive cattle grazing 🐄 and into more land-efficient cropping🌾 📊 #JaereTableFriday 📈 #Econsky
A 10 percentage point increase in electrification reduces the pasture share of farmland by 3.7pp 🐄⬇️, modestly increases cropland by 1.5pp 🌾⬆️, and boosts native vegetation within farms by 3.9pp 🌳⬆️ — the land-sparing pattern predicted by the authors' credit-constraint model.

🚌⚡ Do riders actually care whether their bus is electric? New research in #JAERE ran three studies during Singapore's real-world e-bus rollout and found a resounding yes — on all three margins: satisfaction, willingness to pay, and ridership. 📊 #JaereFigureFriday 📈 #EconSky
