As expected, the AB government reduced the gas tax to zero effective Oct 1. The EV fee, meant to reflect avoided gas taxes that “go to roads” (they don’t, specifically), will remain.

Setting aside the fact that Belarus wouldn’t come close to having enough potash available for export to replace Canadian imports, imagine thinking relying on **Belarus** to grow your country’s food supply was a viable option! 🤦🏼‍♂️

In 2024, the US imported ~12 million metric tons of potassic fertilizers from Canada (hillnotes.ca/2025/06/05/p...) Specialized ships can carry ~60k metric tons, tho container ships <half that (www.sasktoday.ca/central/loca...) So we'd need at least 200 ships loaded from [checks notes] Belarus

U of C poli-sci prof Pablo Policzer (a good friend and wise counsel) has a great piece in the Calgary Herald suggesting his colleagues are underestimating the calamity of Alberta separating in their report to the government on costs calgaryherald.com/opinion/colu...
Screencap from the linked article reads: "The report treats economics as though it comes first and politics second, as if costs could be worked out separately from how government would work. But the causation runs the other way: whether Alberta gets anything like the numbers proposed depends on what kind of political community it becomes, including whether power stays checked, revenue stays transparent and government stays answerable to people."

Trump attempting to shift US imports from Canada to a Russian client state. If there was any doubt before, the argument that the administration is acting in the interests of national security now lies in smoking ruins.
