Thousands more e-bikes and scooters will be added under the new contract and a new model of the classic bike will be introduced. That model adds a cable lock and rear wheel immobilizers.

One clarification is this article makes it seem like the contract extension has already been done, but this is a proposed contract extension that was introduced to City Council today. It will need to be voted on and approved in both the Committee on Pedestrian & Traffic Safety then full council.

Did you know Chicago Municipal Code requires daylighting at intersections? Keeping vehicles back from crosswalks helps everyone see and be seen. The principle is already in City code. But it's also important to look at how street design can make that protection physical, visible & self-enforcing.

Yellow arrows illustrate existing daylighting requirements, with 20 feet of clear space on one approach and 30 feet on the other to keep parked vehicles away from the intersection and improve visibility.

Elevation: Leveling the intersection creates a continuous sidewalk. Texture: Swapping asphalt for brick adds acoustic and visual friction. Constraint: Narrowing the lanes forces focus, while bollards introduce vertical visual friction. The design demands slow, safe behavior.

Complete Streets aren’t just safer streets. They’re an investment in stronger communities 🚲🚶🚌 They create jobs, support local businesses, reduce the costs of crashes, and strengthen neighborhoods. IDOT’s new Walk.Roll.Illinois plan puts some striking numbers behind the case. Link in comments
Five infographic panels highlighting benefits of Complete Streets and walkability: cycling infrastructure creates 11.4 jobs per $1 million invested; Complete Streets projects avert $18.1 million in collision and injury costs; walkable areas generate 75% higher commercial rent premiums; people who bike to businesses make more trips and spend more; and homes in walkable neighborhoods sell for 23.5% more.
