The solution that people dare not mention: congestion pricing. The ULEZ and camera infrastructure is there. There’s already a congestion charge in the very centre. Time to widen the footprint and modify the rates so you pay more near the centre and for peak vs off-peak. It can be done!

Electrification is a far more important energy/climate policy priority than the current preoccupation with things like oil & gas licenses or clean power 2030. Making EVs and heat pumps cheap to buy and operate just has so much more bang for your buck on emissions, energy security, air quality etc

With zonal market reforms ruled out and a whole bunch more renewable generation on the way, failing to do more to upgrade the grid over the last decade is becoming increasingly costly. These network projects now really do need to happen as fast as possible.

Have been very much out of office on a hiking trip for the past two weeks but now I’m back I’m excited to share a bit more about this new research. Short version: electricity demand for heating and cooling (particularly on peak days) looks set to rise basically everywhere in coming decades. (1/n)

As the heatwaves keep on coming this summer, I have a timely new @granthamlse.bsky.social working paper out today (joint with Maren Ludwig at UC Berkeley). We show how economic development, climate change, and decarbonisation policy will reshape global electricity demand for cooling and heating.

In this paper, the authors estimate the global impact of changes in electric heating and cooling demand on the electricity grid in the coming decades.

This kind of behaviour is reckless and stupid. Ban portable BBQs. People caught lighting campfires/fireworks should face severe fines/sanctions. In California during wildfire season you can face thousands of $ in fines and potential jail time for violating regulations around campfires and fireworks

Glad to see LSE speaking out on this. Recent government actions are more than just benign neglect. To name a few: taxing a key export sector, whittling away direct funding (was 40% in 2010 now 10%), fees capped in nominal terms, restrictive immigration rules, and an unjust loan system for students.

Is there still a chance for "chaos with Ed Miliband"...
Guardian political live blog post following Andy Burnham's speech as new Labour leader, reads: "Burnham claims he has not yet made any decisions about who will be in his 'top team'

Earlier in the speech Burnham claimed he had not yet decided on key cabinet appointments. He said:

'Contrary to what you may keep on reading, I haven’t made any decisions yet about who will be in that top team, but I will soon. And when I have, you will see it reflects all parts of our party, all communities.'"

Persistent, terrible air quality from wildfire smoke is such a miserable, worrying new reality. I remember how bleak the California Bay Area was in 2020 - the red sky with street lights on at midday. I remember NYC in 2023. And now this morning I've woken up to find it has descended on DC.

A striking electricity fact I only clocked today. 💡🔌 The PJM grid in the eastern US serves the same population as the UK with both ~70 million people. Yet PJM electricity demand is 3 times the UK! - PJM annual demand is ~850TWh vs ~300TWh in the UK - PJM peak demand is ~160GW vs ~50GW in the UK

Reciprocating internal combustion diesel engines are probably the dirtiest, most expensive way of generating electricity. They’re used in moments of absolute peak electricity demand and usually require special environmental waivers because they produce so much local pollution. For 1 of them.

Refineries have a big inertia problem. They do not want to stop - if throughput drops off and the refinery is in effect mothballed you incur big costs to re-start. So refineries will bid *anything* for physical delivery to keep going *if* there is a chance the situation will revert in the near term.

It tentatively looks as if the more sensible route has prevailed here, with windfall taxes on select generators doing the heavy lifting. Will have to wait and see what the final proposals are, but glad that some of the more exotic calls to mess around with the core market rules haven't been heeded.
