The trouble is that they grow up into analysts and politicians who think that "what is the reason for Britain's economic stagnation?" Is an exam question

Product idea for people whose partners are addicted to chatgpt: a proxy that intercepts requests to the chatgpt endpoint and lets you pretend to be chatgpt and type answers back to them like that's a great idea for solving quantum physics, maybe you should think about it more while doing the dishes

"One conservative commentator said “the website represents one of the more compelling partnerships between MAGA and Silicon Valley — not least because bureaucracy is nowhere to be seen.” Yes, that’s sort of the problem: you actually need to deal with the bureaucracy to make the services work."

As it stands, the site helps to reduce learning costs, but not compliance costs (actual paperwork including verification of identification and documentation to establish eligibility). That is a lot harder to pull off, and the National Design Studio has not shown its capable of that yet.
A friend of mine from Denmark DM’d me to say “Denmark got this in 2007” but the truth is we still don’t have what Denmark had in 2007, which was a central platform by which you could access and engage all government services. America.gov is not connected to Login.gov which is the federal government’s primary means of identifying people who seek services. That feels like table stakes for building something more serious.

I used to think that it radicalized the right while depressing the left, but I've come to realize that a lot of the RW users are also increasingly nihilistic and often doom and feel helpless to change anything. Don't mistake this as sympathy - people who use that platform do so by choice.

I unfortunately have to monitor Twitter for work somewhat regularly and I was struck today that while we think of it here as a radicalization engine (and it surely is that too), it also serves as a nihilism factory. Everything is toxicity, doom, cringe, betrayal - nothing can be authentic or earnest

So people are mad about...MattY pointing out how something the Trump administration did isn't exactly a substantive change in any way and used slightly dismissive language to do so. God I hate the bluesky rage machine. He's not ragebaiting you, you just get mad at everything for no good reason.

What stops him from extending it further is the law Congress passed sets the standard and the Department of Education is implementing it. The law applies to *programs*, not -- as the TNR tweet implied -- majors.

ok but again, Yglesias in the second post is correct, these are mostly targeting scam degrees, not liberal arts ones. (for all my complaining about lefty academic abstraction, it's also not true that most lib arts degrees underpay!)

Kinda interesting because they actually have pretty bad statistical judgement in my experience. I guess the explicit mention of p-hacking throws them off and flags safeguards, but they are very happy to do it if it’s not called that, including when you didn’t ask.

I'm actually not seeing the big deal here? It's a fairly diverse (albeit western, yes) mix of writers for a "Great Questions of Human Life" Gen Ed course, and it's for only half the syllabus. A professor can take this all kinds of directions.

A really funny part of the premiere of 'Neagley' was the amount of hand holding the writers did to reassure men that, even though the series has a female protagonist, she is NOT going to talk about her emotions.

There's a reason why Somerville hasn't had a traffic death in 4 years. The city isn't perfect, but they've made a concerted effort to design many streets around people and not cars. You can still drive, but you're going to have to do so slowly and while paying attention.

A good fresh Star Trek take on those fake isekai title jokes
A tumblr screenshot showing a post and two reblog responses, reading:
1. "star trek would be the ideal fictional universe to get trapped in because you'd explain your situation and they'd be like yeah makes sense. no further questions. fortunately we can use the mysterious warp signature emitting from this system's icy moon to counterface with the solar radiation and slingshot you back home"
2. "I'm from a universe where your world is all a work of fiction." Benjamin Sisko, nodding. "That happened to me once."
