I'm sure things like this happened at times during "don't ask, don't tell," but it seems rather notable that the panel did so here and quickly, did so explicitly and in writing, and did so in this environment — both as in this administration and as in this broader anti-trans moment.

@lilymasonphd.bsky.social spitting truth:
From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The problem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

This is, in fact, how history is sometimes made. For instance: If the king is rumored to be dissolving the National Assembly and planning to send troops into Paris, then some people may think it’s a good idea to storm the Invalides and the Bastille looking for weapons and ammunition.

NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products aren’t good enough! Over 50% of their revenue comes from the United States — They live off American Buyers, American Companies, American Airports, and American Service — All while Canada blocks our GREAT American Banks, and Companies, throughout the U.S.A. They even blocked Gulfstream Aerospace from doing business in Canada — Completely unjust and unfair! That Era is OVER! If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a “piggybank.” BUY AMERICAN. FLY ON AMERICAN AIRLINERS. ENJOY AMERICAN LIQUOR AND BEVERAGES. SAIL ON LAKE AMERICA. AMERICA FIRST! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP

What’s most embarrassing about universities buying into the AI hype is how it betrays our principle to seek accuracy and cite sources. LLMs should stand for Large Language mimicry that introduces errors and is an unreliable citational source itself. Commercial AI is a poison pill for universities.

there is no such thing as "age verification." All "age verification" is actually "identity verification." You can coat it in glitter and "privacy-preserving" wrapping paper. But in the end, mandating age verification means mandating surveillance be built into software and hardware. Period.
