Is bottomless annoyance at Republicans what "normal person" politics is in late Sept/early Oct 2026? If so, that might not be a majority for Reconstruction—at last not unless Democrats interpret it that way regardless. Which they absolutely should.
We seem to have reached a point where the American people —the normal ones, the ones who aren’t hyper-aware of political developments — respond to Donald Trump and other Washington Republicans as you might respond to an annoying co-worker or roommate. You know the pattern: what begins as an occasional gripe becomes, over time, a preemptive eye-rolling every time your nemesis enters the room. Every word from their mouth offends you. You find yourself complaining to friends. Eventually, the object of your enmity barely has to do anything wrong; you get annoyed at the mere reminder of their existence.

Arguably the civil war was as much about northern states not wanting to be legally required to enforce the slavery laws of southern states as it was about the south wanting to continue enslaving people. Just mentioning that for no particular reason.

There is a lot of "oh dear" to go around in the results of this very thorough Pew study on the issues with synthetic samples, but this strikes me as particularly "oh dear" www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/20...
AI polling results can lean on racial or partisan stereotypes

In many cases, our AI poll took beliefs or attitudes that are reasonably common among a particular subgroup and portrayed them as nearly ubiquitous. For example, our AI poll would indicate that:

97% of Hispanic adults are at least somewhat likely to follow the World Cup (while the actual share is 43%).

This is an interesting idea, which for me speaks to dealing with the stereotypical disaffected post-industrial populist voter. Talking to them about real material solutions to their plight be understood as talking this kind of truth to their pain, which is often wielded as a cudgel of authenticity.

A small but essential improvement on federal impeachment is widely used in the states: if a lower house impeaches you, you are *suspended from office* until & unless the upper house acquits you. That's what happened w Paxton. It's the obvious way to handle credible allegations of official misconduct

Not just impeachable. Impeachment, both pres. and agency heads, is the only option. It's impeachment or nothing. Courts won't stop it. Other tools are impotent. Put them on trial the only way you can. Even if you can't get 2/3, use process as punishment. Make it miserable and costly. It can be done.

there literally is no system that is abuse proof, so at a certain point you’re just against the abstract concept of authority or power in general. I think about this when it comes to ALPRs for traffic enforcement. Like if you want to have laws at all, you have to give someone power.

To quote a @chrislhayes.bsky.social jape at the Roberts Court: "They go fast when they want to go fast and slow when they want to go to slow and the decision is *always* an ideological one."
Steve Vladeck, a professor a Georgetown Law, writes up breaking developments from the Supreme Court. The last post in the three-post thread is the kicker, for our purpose here.

"#BREAKING: Over dissents from the three Democratic appointees, #SCOTUS grants a stay in the third-country removals case; clears way for Trump admin. to continue removing non-citizens without a full chance to litigate the conditions in those countries (while also taking up the full merits appeal).

The important scholars of these literatures have given the forces of reaction a clearer self-understanding which they have since put into action in their contemporary political projects.

The deep truth of contemporary reactionary politics is that, though they mouth dismissal of postmodernism, feminism, CRT, & intersectionality, they actually believe in all of it but simply want to liberate their exercise of the relevant forms of arbitrary power from any iota of guilt.

A good liberal position on using AI for composing text is that individual use for individual purposes is nobody's business. Do what you like. But if you are generating text for an audience, you must anticipate the reactions of others. And writing is normally for other people, so norms will matter.

Proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump and Co. conducted a criminal conspiracy to defraud the United States out of its presidential election — ie attempted an autogolpe, or "self-coup" — was in the public record. The facts and the law were never in question. Only if America would follow them.

This is an excellent piece well worth your time. Perry lays out how the very category of "culture war" issues creates a permission structure for Dems to adopt GOP positions on them. What's mainly going on here is contestation over what politics is about, with one key dimension left out entirely...
