This is gorgeous. I wish I had this kind of talent. But the University of Iowa admitted women as of 1855 (granted, the first known female graduate was in 1873). It certainly wasn’t routine for women in that era to go to college but, frankly, it wasn’t common for ANYONE to do so.

So, to recap: a mom became homeless, went to DFCS for housing aid, had her children taken away instead, and was then *billed* for their foster care—leaving her $13k in debt and making it harder to secure the very housing she needed to get them back. Hard to imagine a crueler, more perverse system.

The "exceptionally deadly" 24 hours (my wedding anniversary and Bastille Day; UGH) includes the shooting in Biddeford, Maine.
