While documenting the front lines of the Korean War as a Marine Corps combat photographer, Robert H. Mosier met and befriended a Korean teenager known only by his surname of Kim. Now, more than 70 years later, Mosier's son is hoping to find Kim. From Stars and Stripes' Julie Masson:

A Marine befriended a local boy during the Korean War. His son hopes to find him
More than 70 years after the Korean War, the son of a late Marine combat photographer is searching for a Korean man who, as a teenager, accompanied his father while he documented the conflict.

Real talk? My cheeky governance & strategy threads aren’t just MilSky pedantry. Bake dissent into the DNA of plans, policies, COAs. Whatever you touch. Let em issue edicts. We still shape how, why & when this institution moves. Manage it up. All of it. Make capture structurally difficult again. 💅

Trump hit a new low approval today of 37%. Looks like the GOP is trying to go for Nixon's approval rating when he resigned of 24%. But here is the telling thing: Nixon's *disapproval* of his job performance reached 66% right before he left office. What's Trump's current disapproval rate? ~61%.

This is a bit of a parlor trick and is being hyped. The images are not being generated de-novo. They are being matched with a known set of prior images or text, meaning that they reconstruct the signals recorded by brain when shown images during training. Verrrry different than reading thoughts.

Turns out that killing people is hard. And it's complicated. This is roughly 5% of executions that are botched. Setting aside the moral corruption of execution of prisoners, how does one handle professional incompetence? If 5% of airplane trips were fatal... 5% suggests supreme incompetence here.

I don’t understand how a “protocol” that depends on non-consensual administration of anesthesia drugs gets past the Geneva Conventions ban on non-therapeutic medical experimentation on civilians, even prisoners who “consent”

Botched or failed executions happen shockingly often. One study that was published in 2024 counts 73 botched executions out of the 1407 or so lethal injection attempts since 1977, even before you get to the question of racial bias and the other pile of issues.

This is really good thinking on the ethics and policy of state sponsored killing. It applies to command and control aspects (do we have permission to carry out a military operation that may kill), as it does medical supervision of executions (you are screwing it up, stop). Competence matters.

That’s a Dolomedes tenebrosus. Fishing spider. And she’s a lady spider. She likes your mailbox because fishing spiders like having retreats; they kinda pick a home base they hunt from. I’d call her Dolores. She’s a prodigious hunter; if you have garden pests, she’ll make quick work of them.

We present a typology of traps to avoid: 1. Believing that AI systems are minds 2. Believing that AI systems are theories 3. Believing that cognitive science can be automated. Learn to recognise and avoid these traps. Failure to avoid leads to numerous problems.
Table 1: Typology of traps, what goes wrong if not avoided, and how the traps can be avoided. Note that all traps in a sense constitute category errors (Ryle & Tanney, 2009) and the success-to-truth inference (Guest & Martin, 2023) is an important driver in most, if not all, of the traps.

One of the most harrowing things about academia, when you're a grad student, is how vulnerable you are to how you're perceived by more senior researchers. Your career advancement depends on confidential letters of reference & private discussions amongst faculty. You have no information or control.
