this is specifically what Twitter was re-engineered to do, btw. it exists almost solely to threaten anyone at the flashpoint of a nascent social movement.

Tbf it also exists to subject men to ritualized abuse in order to irreparably bond them to each other so that they won’t blow the whistle on all the raping

there are no worthwhile qualities of fraternities, full stop. when they're not busy raping women and defending their rapist members they abuse and kill new members for fun. colleges have proven they cannot be made safe or reformed. the only reasonable policy at this point is banning all of them.

I’m seeing a lot of posts about talking to your sons in light of the Cornell article. And yes. Talk to your sons. Here are some things you should say, based on anti-violence research about what they need to hear:

Researchers find that one-time trainings about consent can actually increase perpetration. In my interviews with young men, they told me that they knew no one believed what they were saying because it hadn’t come up before—and no one actually held men accountable anyway.

To put it another way, you can’t just tell your sons they need to take accountability—you need to hold them accountable. Start with small stuff. Don’t shield them for the consequences of their actions. Walk them through the process of doing the wrong thing and turning it into the right thing.

the horrific cornell gang rape case has me thinking about emma sulkowicz who alleged she was raped as a student at columbia in 2014 and never got any justice. it has me thinking about the physical and mental weight young women are forced to carry while their safety is subsumed by male potential.

Trial of live facial recognition in London stations ends with a false positive and no arrests
Freedom of information request finds six-month trial cost £320,000, used almost 100 police hours and led to just one – incorrect – alert A six-month trial of live facial recognition (LFR) technology in London’s railway stations that cost more than £320,000 and almost 100 hours of police officers’ time ended in one false match against a watchlist of suspects and no arrests. More than half a million faces were scanned between February and July this year in some of the capital’s busiest transport hubs during the British Transport Police (BTP) trial of the surveillance technology, which aimed to help catch offenders and people breaching court orders. This kind of thing is infuriating and it is constant. PIP is an in-work benefit designed to cover the extra costs related to disability (and for most people it's desperately inadequate). Many people are only able to work because of the equipment, transport etc. that PIP makes available to them.

I hate talking about AI every day but I recognize the active danger it represents to nature and the human inspiration that has made my life worthwhile. I cannot overlook the end goal the obscenely wealthy have always had for this tech: to squeeze the rest of us even further out of a modest living.

The Rs are doing a full-spectrum assault on the existence of anyone not cis and straight, and saying it is about "boys playing girls sports". And every D who looks at that and goes "yeah, I oppose boys in girls sports" is endorsing the effort. Because they're affirming "sports" is all the Rs did.

"So many people are coming to us who have never come to the food bank before. It used to be people who were working hourly-wage jobs. Now we see salary employees." Maybe we should measure the "strength" of the economy not by the stock market but by the length of the line at our local food bank?

Of the 14 songs that broke the same record "Choosin' Texas" just broke, nine of them were this century and six were in the last decade. Is a hit song still a hit if it climbs to the top of streaming charts and gets algorithmically stuck there for sixth months?

It really gives the game away when the anti trans orgs are calling the election of the neo nazi party in Germany a "glimmer of hope."
A screenshot of an online article headline from "Inspecting Gender" by Genspect. The main heading reads: "Germany: A Glimmer of Hope for Sex Realists?" Below the title, the summary text asks: "Is the victory of the AfD in Germany a dark day for democracy or a glimmer of hope for sex realists? By David Allison." The bottom metadata displays the Genspect logo, "5 hours ago," and a "Listen" audio option button. In the top right corner, there is a teal "Subscribe" button alongside a circular profile avatar.

I haven't had anything to add re: Cornell, because I don't think anyone wants to use this space to reckon with the fact that none of these systems are meant to help you, unless you are a university seeking to minimize your legal exposure. It's not fair to ask strangers to reckon with that here.

It's too grim to face the situation we are in, every time these cases come out in the news, which is there there is no law, policy, or policing remedy to sexual violence, and definitely not one that is capable of ending sexual violence.
