Wow, it's true lol. If you ask the Trump administration's new stupid America.gov chatbot to "play Minecraft" it goes completely insane. Just tried it.

"Silicon Valley created a new, worse version of popularity that everyone just accepted at face value at some point between 2019-2023." The Garbage Day newsletter is talking here about pop music, but I'm gonna hold onto this and apply it everywhere.

Of the 14 songs that broke the same record "Choosin' Texas" just broke, nine of them were this century and six were in the last decade. Is a hit song still a hit if it climbs to the top of streaming charts and gets algorithmically stuck there for sixth months?

Many years ago, there was a yearly internet-themed Halloween costume contest in New York City called Hallowmeme. Our next live show at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn on October 27th is NOT Hallowmeme. But it is a tribute. It’s a night of comedy, music, journalism, and of course, a costume contest.

Yes! If I walked into a [MY STORE OF CHOICE] and there were other customers coming up to me telling me I should be shoved into an oven, I wouldn't go back. And yet millions do not bc they want to, but bc they're addicted. Good @ryanhatesthis.bsky.social today: www.garbageday.email/p/if-app-bad...
Which is really the problem with using monthly active users to measure enshittification. Social platforms get compared to physical malls or big box stores often, but that doesn’t really capture what they are. If you walk into a Walmart and it’s completely rundown, yes, you would stop going to that store and it would go out of business. As long as there are other stores left in your town you could still go to, of course. But social platforms monetize negative experiences the same as positive ones. All of these companies — and, apparently, Thelot — believe that if people keep signing up and keep using these apps they’re doing so because they actively want to and enjoy being on them. It couldn’t possibly be that you need to be on them now to run a business or communicate with other people!

And so, vibes dictate that millennials were all polyamorous quirk chungus Disney adults drinking tea out of mustache mugs and wearing Doctor Who scarves and reading Supernatural fanfic and doing TikTok dances at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Even though the richest and most powerful millennials in the world include Mark Zuckerberg, Taylor Swift, Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, Rihanna, Stephen Miller, Kalshi co-founder Luana Lopes Lara, and Jared Kushner. Swift might be dead to rights quirk chungus. But the others? Not really!

There was so much neurotic moral policing when I was a kid in the 90s and 2000s about what people were doing outside of their homes — how they dressed, how they talked, where they went — but after 2020, we've become obsessed with what we think people are doing or not doing at home.

Couldn't fit this into the piece, but the belief that the left needs its own oaf means that Trump is still dictating the rules of engagement. Believing 1) white working class men are the voters that matter and 2) that they will only vote for themselves is just MAGA with a different coat of paint.

OK so I finally saw both: -Backrooms was technically impressive, prettier, and better paced. Would watch again. -Obsession had a tighter script, better characters, and was scarier. But it suffers from orange sludge lighting and is a meaner, nastier film I don't want to ever watch again.

They claim that the anti-trans movement started in 2014 which is just wrong. I've spent the last few years binging a lot of old TV shows and what's very strange about the shows that ran across the 2000s is that many of them start making trans jokes completely out of nowhere between 2005-2007.

I wrote about FreddyLA7, the apex predator of World Cup tourists. Is he some kind of fake? Complicated question! More behind the paywall in today's @garbageday.email - link here: www.garbageday.email/p/the-intern...
Was Freddy’s Ronaldo posting calculated for maximum engagement? I don’t think that’s unfair to say. Does that mean he’s a fake? That’s more unfair — not to get philosophical, but if someone is this dedicated to Ronaldo, calling them “not a real Ronaldo fan” feels pretty silly. But either way, it shows that Freddy’s popularity wasn’t more or less organic than anything else you see on X. He wasn’t a nobody who exploded on our feeds, he’s a savvy, hardworking poster who knows to stick with a trend, and got in on a massive trend at the right time.

That might be enough to call him a psyop for a lot of people, though, just like with the whole Geese thing a few months ago. People have finally understood that they shouldn’t take everything that they scroll across at face value. And to build up any sense of collective media literacy for our algorithms, it looks like we’re gonna have to take it one level at a time. Right now we’re at “anything that gets too popular online is a fake/psyop/industry plant” — and it just isn’t that simple.

My guiding principle is that platforms actually don't — or even can't — suppress anything beyond nudity, gore, swears, some hate speech, etc. But I do think they can promote different content and incentivize users to make more of it. Which is what I think is happening on YouTube right now.

The NY Times goyslop piece is dangerously misinformed. "Goyslop" hasn't lost its racist meaning — garbage fed to non-Jews by a shadowy cabal of Jewish elites — it's just that it has spread so far and wide now that kids use it without questioning it. That's bad! www.nytimes.com/2026/06/18/m...

Paying a subscription to use Meta products is patently absurd for the average user. Which Meta obviously knows. From a content perspective, they offer nothing that's worth paying for. These are predatory subscriptions plans clearly aimed at businesses that are dependent on these platforms.

Russia has ruled a K-pop omegaverse fic to be illegal, sentencing its author to 18 months in a labor camp. So is it worth reading? Get the link I tracked down in today's @garbageday.email and decide for yourself! www.garbageday.email/p/everything...
On May 8th, a Russian woman named Alexandra Kuzyk was sentenced to 18 months in a labor camp for posting gay fan fiction. Even though the fanfic was free, it was found by a court in Yekaterinburg to be illegal pornography. Ever since 2023, when Russia declared the country’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group to be an extremist organization, they’ve made multiple efforts to criminalize anything gay on the internet.

Naturally, the biggest question on my mind was, “can I read this criminally gay fanfic?”
