The vast majority of child maltreatment cases are related to neglect, and the vast majority of neglect cases are related to poverty. The family policing system is just another tool for the state to exert its power—it was never intended to protect children.

It is shockingly common for child welfare agencies to remove children from parents because they can't afford housing. Billing them for the foster care really is just beyond the pale. www.thenation.com/article/soci...

All too often, when parents can’t afford safe housing, the solution child welfare services offer is putting their children in foster care.

This is actually quite common. In a lot of municipalities the CPS will consider this “neglect.” Not that the state failed bc housing isn’t affordable or the only jobs available don’t provide for cost of living. But it’s the parents fault. It’s another prison pipeline.

In 2018, Annalinda Martinez and her daughters became homeless. She went to Georgia's child welfare agency looking for help finding housing. Instead, the state took her children. Then DFCS began charging her for their foster care. Those bills eventually left her $13,000 in debt.

Georgia removed her kids because she was homeless. The state is charging her $13,000 for foster care
Georgia is among several states that have moved away from charging parents for their kids' time in foster care. But parents who already owe money for past cases are still on the hook.

ICE has abducted Senegalese WBB player Aminata Seck and won't release her. DHS 'policy' is to provide medical care to prisoners at intake, yet they admit to denying her care for an ACL injury for 1.5 months. The NCAA is letting it happen, despite its predatory recruitment of ICAs. We explain.

Aminata Seck’s detention shows the bargain facing international college athletes: universities eagerly recruit them, but support can disappear when their immigration status becomes precarious.

This story brought me back to Kara, one of the mothers in my book, There Is No Place for Us. She was homeless with her four kids while driving for DoorDash. They had to pee in bottles so bathroom stops wouldn't make her late. After gas, she earned $6.50 an hour—75 cents less than the minimum wage.

"These are enervating thoughts, the thoughts of despair. They crowd back, unbidden... Whether these thoughts are true or not I find less interesting than the possibilities for beauty they may hold. We are down here in time, where beauty grows." Annie Dillard (1945—2026), "Sojourner"
Photograph of a page from Annie Dillard’s “Sojourner,” showing the passage: “These are enervating thoughts, the thoughts of despair. They crowd back, unbidden, when human life as it unrolls goes ill, when we lose control of our lives or the illusion of control, and it seems that we are not moving toward any end but merely blown. Our life seems cursed to be a wiggle merely, and a wandering without end. Even nature is hostile and poisonous, as though it were impossible for our vulnerability to survive on these acrid stones. Whether these thoughts are true or not I find less interesting than the possibilities for beauty they may hold. We are down here in time, where beauty grows. Even if things are as bad as they could possibly be, and as meaningless, then matters of truth are themselves indifferent; we may as well please our sensibilities and, with as much spirit as we can muster, go out with a buck and wing.”
