Quinone-transporting filaments expand bioenergetic capacity in Gram-positive Bacillota
Nature Microbiology, Published online: 17 August 2026; doi:10.1038/s41564-026-02450-zBacillus subtilis Ncp and NADH dehydrogenase form tube-like filaments with phospholipid-lined chambers that associate with quinones, which can expand bioenergetic capacity and support respiratory electron transfer.

(3/4) The video shows NPCs in a neuron within an expanded volume of ~6.37×4.33×0.2mm (≈25×17µm×0.8 µm PreExM). This was acquired with a 10x air objective but individual NPCs are still visible 😁 At the end we show a particle-averaged reconstruction from ~20 NPCs, with a resolution of ~35 Å!

Me two months ago: the flight to Heathrow is at a more convenient time and if the flight to Stansted is delayed I might miss the last train. Me today: flight to Heathrow delayed 2 h, baggage claim delayed 40 min so I miss the midnight bus, currently waiting for the 2 am bus which is 30 min late 🤷‍♂️

Love it when I have 15 minutes left at the end of the day to tick something off tomorrow's to do list. Of course, there are several things on today's list that I didn't even start, but I did see a heron.
Tl;Dr, a very green pond with a heron at the far end.

A very green looking pond (I think it's mostly for drainage from the DESY campus?) surrounded by lush greenery. At the left edge is half a lamp post, because I'm really great at photo composition.

Right at the far edge of the pond a heron stands, looking very blown out because it's a very bright day and I don't understand how to use my phone camera. Seeing a heron was not on either to do list.

Some bacteria do not live as individuals. They build multicellular filaments and connect neighboring cells through tiny cell-cell junctions. Cyanobacteria are among the most beautiful examples 😍 In our new paper, we reveal first molecuar insights on the cyanobacterial septal junction architecture 🧵

I've made some dodgy grids in my time, but I don't think I've ever failed to add sample to half the squares 😁 #TeamTomo
A scanning electron microscope image of a cryoem grid. The grid is a circle about 3 mm across (here magnified about 100x), covered in small squares. Half of the squares are covered in a thick layer of sample, the other half are almost completely bare, with a very clean division between the two halves.

I think I finally figured out how to shape Franzbrötchen. Still need some practice on getting the shape consistent though... I also made some spicy Twisty Strips from Nicola Lamb's Sift. #baking #backliebe
A Franzbrötchen (a cross between a croissant and a cinnamon roll, native to Hamburg) on a plate. They're really delicious, you should fly to Hamburg and try one. Next to it is a mug of overly-milky tea decorated with the message "The lemon is in play", shaped like a lemon, a reference to the brilliant radio sit-com Cabin Pressure. A tray of pastries made of twisted viennoiserie dough. Not visible is the fact that they're made with a compound butter containing chili oil and soy sauce, making a delicious savoury snack, unlike most sweet viennoiserie. Unbaked Franzbrötchen proofing in a proofing chamber, underneath a metal rack that will hold another tray of pastries. The same tray of Franzbrötchen after baking. Some are well shaped, some have spread into each other.. One or two look a bit overdone. Next time I should probably make them each a bit bigger and spread them over two trays
