National Poetry Day, you say? It has to be this:
Kim Addonizio
TO THE WOMAN CRYING UNCONTROLLABLY
IN THE NEXT STALL
If you ever woke in your dress at 4 A.M. ever
closed your legs to a man you loved opened
them for one you didn't moved against
a pillow in the dark stood miserably on a beach
seaweed clinging to your ankles paid good money for a bad haircut backed away
from a mirror that wanted to kill you bled
into the back seat for lack of a tampon
if you swam across a river under rain sang
using a dildo for a microphone stayed up to watch the moon eat the sun entire
ripped out the stitches in your heart
because why not if you think nothing & no one can / listen I love you joy is comingTattoo on my arm that reads “listen I love you joy is coming”

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Well, happy Charles Darwin is “very poorly today & very stupid & hate[s] everybody & everything” to all who celebrate, because he wrote those words in a letter to his friend (and author of Principles of Geology) Charles Lyell 161 years ago today

Really sad to hear of the death of @annapicard.bsky.social, who I only knew on the other place and then here, but who I nevertheless felt I knew. A great loss to music and writing.

Well, if it’s 30 September, it must be... oh God. The 36th anniversary of the first—and, you may not be entirely surprised to hear—only transmission of a sitcom which was genuinely called ‘Heil Honey, I’m Home’, in which Hitler and Eva Braun live next door to Jewish couple Arny and Rosa Goldenstein

Had one of these from a “senior editor at Simon & Schuster” earlier. If the length and anodyne nature of the email didn’t give it away, the sign-off “keep being awesome” did.

Today is the 321st anniversary of the last of the ‘wars of the fists’ (guerre dei pugni) on a bridge in Venice. Sometimes also known as battagliole sui ponti, or “little battles on the bridges”, or guerre de canne (wars with sticks), they could also involve cudgels, roof tiles, stones, and knives
Ponte dei Pugni, Pietro Liberi (1605-87)—a 17th century painting of a massive scrap on a bridge. It’s covered in people, wrestling and jostling, and is surrounded by spectators

Detectives at the Fairford scene
Russell (grey beard, glasses) and Hugh (dark hair, young) from Detectorists, both wearing headphones. They’re peering at a spot just below the camera. The subtext/backstory is that they’ve been asked by the mayor to find his chains of office, which he has lost. It turns out that the place they were lost is a well-known local dogging spot. Hence the slight look of disgust and trepidation on their faces.

The loneliness of the long-distance pianist. You can see the concentration in @jasonhazeley.bsky.social’s back – about halfway through a stunning performance of Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians. Bravi tutti.
The back of a man sitting at a piano. Wooden floor. The lighting is low and there’s a hint of dry ice. Silhouettes of audience members in the background.

Been reading about terror birds. They died out about 100,000 years ago, were up to 10 feet tall, 350 kg, flightless, could run faster than an ostrich, and had sharp sickle toes for grabbing prey and huge beaks for jabbing them to death. And people complain about gulls.
A terror bird skeleton. Big head, big feet, long neck.

Morning all. Today I'm launching a new range of colourful & 'fun' bird posters celebrating a bird's essential piece of kit: the good old beak. There are over 16* BEAKY BIRD posters + 1 group portrait with more in the pipeline. xx Check 'em out: www.edwardphilips.co.uk/beakybirds.h... * i.e. 17
Bird beaks are multi-functional, rather like hands in humans. Used not only for feeding, beaks are also important for display, nest construction, singing (of course!) and even regulating body heat. Poster of stylized bird portraits arranged in a grid that highlights diverse beak shapes and species names on teal panels, titled "BEAKY BIRDS" with a short caption about beak functions. Two stylized yellow-throated toucans facing each other against a teal background; top-right text reads "YELLOW-THROATED TOUCAN" with the scientific name "Ramphastos ambiguus."Stylized poster of a sword-billed hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera) hovering left-of-center, its extraordinarily long bill reaching a red tubular flower at the top right against a solid teal background, with the species name printed in the corner.
