It is so mentally corrosive to try to ascertain, every day, whether the images I am seeing or the texts I am getting or the phone calls I am receiving are real - produced by a human who is trying to communicate something with me, even indirectly. It makes me feel insane and paranoid all the time

When I lived in the UK none of my concerns e.g. affordable housing, climate action, increases in welfare spending, scrapping tuition fees, an ethical foreign policy, were ever framed as legitimate concerns. lnstead I was routinely told to fuck off by most political parties for having such concerns.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: in a diner, a waitress looks over her shoulder to watch a TV mounted on the wall. A news reporter is one screen, surrounded with text that reads FOUR DEAD and DEVELOPING STORY. The reporter says, “please be advised— the murderer is still at large.” Panel 2: the reporter continues, “here’s their photo.” He gestures with his pen towards a photo next to him. The photo is a guinea pig wearing a multicolored propeller hat. Panel 3: the waitress watches the TV pensively. Behind her at the diner counter is a guinea pig in a propeller hat, seated before a plate with an entire head of lettuce. This may be the murderer in question but at this stage I’d only be speculating.

A lot of well educated English ppl are astonishing ignorant about the structure of the state they're citizens of. If you can't get the basic facts about your own state right I guess the EU was always going to be a struggle

Suffice to say the UK political establishment still doesn't want to hear that there aren't special EU deals on offer... and that stops them having the fuller debate on what is really needed.

♥️ Love this ♥️ At a party given by a billionaire on Shelter Island, Kurt Vonnegut told his pal, Joseph Heller, that their host, a hedge fund manager, had made more money in a single day than Heller had ever earned from "Catch-22." Heller said,“Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

Any think tank papers of this sort is about making a sale of policy to an audience whose support it needs. Yet invariably the tone and content of UK stuff on the EU is focused on getting buyers in London when in reality to get anywhere these policies need buyers in Brussels and EU state capitals

Morning @samfr.bsky.social your Substack dropped this morning. Really thoughtful piece. I agree with much of it—especially that employer engagement is the missing piece in England’s technical education. Where we differ is that you’re still analysing vocational education through an English lens. 🧵

The 1979 episode of 'Friday Night, Saturday Morning' where John Cleese and Michael Palin argued their point, (rather successfully, I thought), about the ludicrous controversy surrounding 'The Life of Brian', while Malcolm Muggeridge and the Bishop of Southwark railed against them. 1979 John Cleese is still 1979 John Cleese, but Malcolm Muggeridge is now 2026 John Cleese. I guess the question his recent opinions have raised is whether Mr. Cleese has always been a bigoted bellend, or if he has simply developed a taste for bellendery in the intervening years.
