FYI my dad (the late Dr. Philip J Meeks) was an ND Alum and blue collar northern IN native (Andrean HS). My grandparents lived in South Bend and I spent family trips all through childhood and young adulthood in/around ND campus. So yeah lots of time spent in the lore :-)

Because the Holy Cross priests that founded it were big on educating the local population, not serving the elite. In late 1800s and 1900s the Catholic pop in Northern Indiana was heavily Irish. They took the insults and turned it around. Sorry, was that an actual question or just a dig? 😂

A female colleague shared a story with me about a male colleague hired around the same time as her that had successfully negotiated a ~1.5x salary for himself because his female partner didn't have a job (but his colleagues' partners did). Heads I win, tails you lose logic.

My advice to a young graduate student who was asking me about what I saw as a future for the sciences in America today... "If you can survive & find people to help you survive the next 2.5yrs, then we might be positioned for a renaissance in science and science funding... But that's all I've got."

This is the main concern for me. The lack of that specific number makes it difficult to know, or communicate, likelihood of success or competitiveness... For example to chair during evals If assuming bad faith, it may also facilitate cherry-picking of grants from favored states and institutions
