Can confirm that being a journalist is occasionally very sick indeed.
The greatest email exhange I've ever been party to in my life. In which I ask the question "Do you think horses used in films know that they are in a film?

The reply is

Dear Seamas O'Reilly,
my answer to your question is: no

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up. I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

The adamant elite refusal to call bullshit is a big part of How We Got Here. The prevailing cultural attitude for years is you must not, under any circumstances, treat anything as bad faith. You are obligated to find some reasonable idea and engage with that, even if you distort to get there.

I have just seen my third news item with people saying "well sure crime is way down but if you tell people who are scared of crime that fact, you'll alienate them" and this can only be some sort of society wide, generational failing.

Rowling's 24/7 commitment to being an absolute nightmare ghoul is sort of extraordinary. She has every option in the world for how to spend her life and she commits herself entirely to hatred and self-righteous mean-spiritedness; some are more effective at evil but nobody puts in the hours like her.

World Athletics says that "The SRY gene is a reliable proxy for determining biological sex." The guy who literally discovered the gene and has spent the last 35 years researching it says they're wrong. theconversation.com/world-athlet...

World Athletics’ mandatory genetic test for women athletes is misguided. I should know – I discovered the relevant gene in 1990
World Athletics says its genetic test for women ensures ‘the integrity of women’s sport’ – but science does not support this overly simplistic idea.

the problem with letting democrats backslide their support of trans rights whether it be trans in sports or using bathrooms is we’ve seen “compromise” in the UK labor party. they gave into “reasonable” TERF demands and it destroyed the labor party and all rights for trans people

SPACESUIT FACT: We laugh at the meanly named blobfish (psychrolutes marcidus) because of his looks in the left photo, here above sea level. But in his home habitat at 60-120x the pressure a la the right hand photo, this guy looks normal. So on the left, that's you in zero pressure without a suit.
A sad unhappy looking blob of a fish, because he's out of water at best at a sixtieth of the pressure his species evolved to survive in. The fish is puffed and engorged out horribly as a result, looking utterly miserable and, at least according to the reason this poor lad was used as a meme, utterly ugly. You wouldn't look your best at a sixtieth of your habitat's pressure either, honey. The blobfish looking a lot more normal way down deep in the ocean where sixty more atmospheres worth of pressure cling snugly around the matter that constitutes his body. He just looks like a pit bull of a fish, because you'd have to be damned strong to live and swim a kilometre below sea level. A marvelous and impressive little guy, in his proper context.

Screenshot of text:

What is skepticism? In my lifetime as a word-nerd, I have known "skepticism" to refer to a sort of stubborn insistence upon rigor and evidence in place of things like dogma and "common sense." A skeptic, by those terms, is someone who questions what they are told. Crucially, a skeptic actually questions, as in seeks answers. A person who merely refuses to learn what can be known is not a skeptic, but rather an ignoramus; a person who raises questions but does not seek their answers is not a skeptic, but a bullshitter. A person who rejects empirical knowledge, who refuses the answers that exist while requesting ones more to their liking that flatter their preference for unfounded contrarian gibberish and conspiratorial paranoia, is not a skeptic. They're the exact opposite of that: a mark. A sucker. A credulous boob.

I sent another email

Julia Wong 1:34 PM
to Charlie, tripp.mickle v
Hi Charlie,
The Times's story does not in fact make clear what the source of the information about the supposed size and dexterity of young Chinese women's fingers are, which is why I had so many follow up questions. What kind of generalization is "Young Chinese women have small fingers" if not racial or genetic? Can we at least agree that it is a generalization about a physical trait (often genetic) related to a group identified by their sex and nationality? Can we not also agree that making such a claim about any demographic group should require some actual evidence? The inclusion of unsubstantiated race science in an article is an unfortunate error, but it is also easily amended. I would suggest that rather than attempting to scare up sources for a ridiculous, unfounded and blatantly racist claim, you consider simply correcting it.
Best,
Julia Wong
