draft post that’s too long: thinking about the number of European WW1 generals, both Axis and Allies, who were LARPing as crusaders over 500 years after the fact is so funny. von Hindenburg claimed that the victory at Tannenberg in 1914 vindicated the Teutonic Knights loss at Grunwald (1410), Allenby walked thru the Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem on foot to prove his holiness as a crusader for Christ when Jerusalem was taken by the British in 1917, and Gourard ransacked Saladin's tomb during the post-war French occupation of Syria in 1920 as "revenge" for losing Jerusalem at Hattin (1187). and after all that, they still haven't gotten over losing the Crusades
