also the specific complaint that joyce adopts a mentality that some books are 'lesser'. just imagine not having that mentality. literally every book is exactly as good as every other book. that's the mentality we should all be shooting for apparently

We know that the best way to draw someone into a history major is in a class of 12. That's why you don't get classes of 12 as a service dept. You get 180 students, in two-hour chunks, with no breakout sessions or teaching assistants. You are set up to fail, at least in terms of attracting majors

A point @annakornbluh.bsky.social has frequently made about labor intensification is that colleges cut support staff, offload essential work that support staff did onto faculty, then wonder why faculty aren’t being as “productive.” What once took our Asst. Dir. an hour, easily takes me twice that.

The fact of the matter is that AI is language without the demands of an other subjectivity and language is a riff we can ride for a very long time: that kind of vacancy is a magnet for projecting fantasies of all kinds, hope and fear alike. We get nowhere on “AI” until we tackle that.

It was only a matter of time
Epistemic Assholes
Cameron Boult
Synthese (forthcoming)

Abstract
In this paper, I develop and defend the concept epistemic assholes. An epistemic asshole is someone who exhibits a distinctive form of epistemic badness characterized not by gross irrationality or hostility to truth, but by a stable, entitled disregard for one’s epistemic relations with others. Drawing on Aaron James’s (2012) account of moral assholes, I examine how people can systematically exploit epistemic cooperation by allowing themselves special advantages—such as “freedom from inquiry”, “doxastic comfort”, and “freedom to criticize”—while remaining insulated from criticism by an entrenched sense of entitlement. The resulting view, the Relational Approach to Epistemic Assholes (REA), explains why epistemic assholes are not epistemically the worst, yet are nonetheless deeply galling. After motivating the need for this concept, I show how REA captures both “impure” cases (involving both epistemic and moral assholery) and “pure” epistemic assholes, whose objectionable conduct is driven by epistemic aims themselves. I further explore connections between epistemic assholes and epistemic vice, and the causal role that epistemic assholery can play in active ignorance and epistemic exploitation. Through this latter connection, I argue that epistemic assholes play an insidious causal role in sustaining objectionable social power dynamics. The concept of epistemic assholes provides a valuable lens for understanding and calling out important but often-hidden hazards in our social epistemic environment.

I think about this point by Adorno so often of late.
My thesis about this would be that all
humans deep down, whether they admit this or not, know that it
would be possible or it could be different. Not only could they live
without hunger and probably without anxiety, but they could also
live as free human beings. At the same time, the social apparatus has
hardened itself against people, and thus, whatever appears before
their eyes all over the world as attainable possibility, as the evident
possibility of fulfillment, presents itself to them as radically impossible. And when people universally say today what was once reserved
only for philistines in more harmless times, "Oh, that's just utopian;
oh, that's possible only in the land of Cockaigne. Basically that
shouldn't be like that at all," then I would say that this is due to the
situation compelling people to master the contradiction between the
evident possibility offulfillment and the just as evident impossibility
offulfillment only in this way, compelling them to identify themselves
with this impossibility and to make this impossibility into their own
affair. In other words, to use Freud, they "identify themselves with
the aggressor" and say that this should not be, whereby they feel that
it is precisely this that should be, but they are prevented from attaining
it by a wicked spell cast over the world.

Nodding along til my head falls off
Judith Butler's ideas specifically. My point here is not to defend the alleged properties of our writing-which, as I've suggested, are mostly projections-but rather the specific reading practices already intrinsic to humanities teaching and research that attend to the difficulties of making thought manifest in language. Call it form, call it figuration, call it rhetoric; these are the features of communication that render its use irreducible to the simple transmission of data bytes and incompatible with the reactionary desire for immediacy.

this is a great point; criticism, like film criticism, prepares a broad educated public to think about culture in sophisticated ways, and the absence of stable jobs for critics has - I think - led to a public without some of the critical resources they should have.
