#LitHodgepodge 4 This is so tricky, because there is so much I want to know! But for today, I think I will ask about establishing setting! I love characters, but places are harder. So, what are some of the key features to highlight about a place to draw people into it and set a scene?

October 4th – contract I don’t post parts with Jade often, but weirdly this is two back-to-back this week! Mikiva might know the man currently trying to kill them from her old life. #DawnsBlood #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Mikiva tore off the loose hood. Her eyes widened and she quickly moved around in front of the man to get a better look, stepping into his line of vision for the first time.
“Gods, Mikiva?” the man blurted. “Seems like you’ve managed to keep your retirement interesting. What are you doing here, with a fugitive from Esrasea?”
“I take it you two have met?” Jade raised an eyebrow.
“You could say that. As R’all here was just far too transparent about,” Mikiva shot him a withering glare, “we were once in the same line of work. Which means these are assassins. Azure Scorpions, to be more specific. This many men…someone is laying out some serious coin for you, Jade.”
“And for the death of anyone who stands in our way,” R’all added. “You know your status grants you no immunity.”
“Of course I do.” She rolled her eyes. “I’ve done my share of contracts involving former members.”
“So, you know that we will still have to kill you.”
“I know you can try.” Mikiva smiled. “But if you are the best they sent, I am not too worried.”
R’all glowered at her but said nothing.

#WIPSnips I shared this one semi-recently, so some of you who actually read these might recognize it. Here's the scene where Cookie thinks about how alchemy is both an art and a science.

Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

“Sage, would adding lily petals counteract the Neutral potion?” She asked him, just to be certain. Some alchemy was an art, and one could add ingredients as they pleased to change the flavor or scent. But some alchemy was also a science, and one had to know the exact details of their ingredients if they wanted to make a safe and effective brew.
“It should be fine,” he answered. “Don’t go overboard. One petal per month of dosage will suffice. And don’t let any felines drink it. Lilies are toxic to cats, Nilians, and Wynnles.”
Cookie added three, but those three tiny petals looked so insignificant compared to the whole cauldron. Against her better judgment, she added a fourth. Alchemy was partially an art form, and this was her way of being creative. She couldn’t draw or play an instrument or write poetry, but she could craft a potion that would be beloved by the one she hoped to become better friends with.

#LitHodgepodge D3: I'll do both! The left is my original art of my #OC Detective Megan Leanne Deer. In 'The Canary', she is a grown adult detective in Wrightsville investigating the disappearance of local teens. In 'The Cage', the story follows her life and how she's involved in the previous story.

A character portrait sketch sheet of headshots of my OC Megan Leanne Deer throughout key ages in her story. From top to bottom, left to right, her ages are as follows: 17, 15, 21, 35-45, and 55-65. At the bottom of the page under her name is a sketched shotgun rifle, the one she grew up using on the farm as a kid.

A 9 panel OC moodboard for my character Megan Leanne Deer. Described top to bottom, left to right, the images are as follows: a grinning pale woman with blonde wavy hair, a crookedly hung pay phone, a cheap brick porch with a single plastic chair by the open screen door, keys on a carabiner hooked onto someone's back pocket of their jeans, a vintage button reading 'I BECAME A TEENAGE LESBIAN!', someone with brown heeled boots kneeling in bootcut jeans, a grungy 80s teen outfit with an oversized unbuttoned flannel over a tucked white tshirt and jeans, a pale hand guarding the wind to light a cigarette, a blonde girl in shadow with her face concealed.

A pair of loose sketches of a twenty-something woman with chin-length curly hair and an oversized sweater. One is a head-and-shoulders portrait, and the other is a full-body where she is holding up her phone as though taking a mirror selfie. In the full-body sketch, she is wearing loose-fitting trousers and sneakers as well. #LitHodgepodge I'm Nicole (She/Her) and I’m working on "Requiem of Worlds: The Mysteries of Jane Sothara", an epic fantasy series featuring a scholarly MC, a perplexing world, sapphic romance, magical technologies, and horrific mysteries! #Writingcommunity #WritingPrompts
