There was no longer any flash, now Slate's eyes pulsed a vivid shade of blue. Brighter than a clear, summer sky. For something that should have been a comfort, all Halla now felt was a chilling fear. Slate's face changed subtly. It became blanker and her skin was clear but also had a waxy sheen. A mask that had pushed its way up through her pores.

"They're trying to free her."

The voice wasn't Slate's and the face was one Halla had seen many times in the Orbo. Cracked and weathered above temple entrances. The Fifth Sister, Calchas. Halla caught her breath, feeling cold air rattle through her teeth. She had witnessed a god so many times, but the Sixth Sister had been cowed and pathetic. This god was none of that. Her eyes blazed with such a heat that Halla expected Slate's face to shrivel.

Instead, it melted.

Slathers of pink slime began to run down Slate's head, from forehead to chin.

She made me promise not to ask about the carriage. She made me promise not to mention it to anyone. She made me promise not to inspect the carriage. She made me promise not to even think about the carriage.

Both trains and carriages were fascinating technologies. The engines produce alternating pulses of raw magic from batteries which — with clever usage of the attractive and conductive properties of mythril — create motion. Miniaturization for carriages, however, was still fairly new.

So new… that nobody owned a carriage. Only very specific businesses even had permits to have them. So I was very happy not to ask where she obtained her extremely illegal carriage.

“Oh! The wean!” Callan pointed after him. “He’s my nephew…well, like…my brother? His Mammy Rowan -she’s one of the spooky wives at the docks- she was in the same home as me when I was a bairn. She was my wet nurse and then I got relocated a few times and we lost contact til I was in school.”
“Why’s she upset? What you done?”

There was a pause in their conversation as the two strolled through the gates and paused to observe The Citadel’s cold looming walls. They were expected inside for another gaudy meal full of awful guests. In fact, the Equinox parade kicked off weeks’ worth of celebrations, galas and, eventually, the ceremonies.

From Magpie's introduction in Ch6. I struggled to find something not interwoven with dialogue and I'm not confident that I have a distinct narrative voice. (Sentences change by the time I record as well, so they're more natural to speak aloud. Often words like 'for' become 'fay' when spoken.)

The airship had barely touched down on the obsidian of The Wastes when The Witch’s shieling hut appeared, like an invitation, in Callan’s eyeline.

On the surface it was typical of a shieling- a small, drystane structure, with a peat sod roof and no windows. Though rarer this far down The Map, the shieling might pass as a perfectly normal old dwelling, even with its lack of door; to a layman at least.

A quick glance had told Callan everything he needed to know. Too many impossibly placed jumper stones, moss growing across their surfaces but suspiciously absent between the cracks and not a shred of light spilled between the gaps in the stone either. An amateur might’ve been taken in, instead, Callan continued wrangling his rowdy band of subordinates for the proceeding exploit.

No matter how many miles his company clip-clopped along on the obsidian, the hut remained, parallel to his line of sight, sometimes shifting to the other side, as if it thought he simply hadn’t noticed. It remained, without so much as a passing acknowledgment from any of his peers.

Even once the group arrived outside The Observatory’s tall doors, dismounted and rolled up their sleeves, heavy bags of tools slung over their shoulders, the shieling quietly persisted, stalking like a starved fox.
