#WIPSnips Prologue time! Starting off with a BANG! Jane's story begins with the end of Seren's. Seren's motives to want to kill Jane's uncle are shrouded in mystery, only to be understood much later on in the series. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Much of the small warehouse was in ruin. The ground was littered with the varied contents of the heavy wooden crates that were once stacked upon each other, as well as the charred remains of the crates themselves. The steel racks that lined the walls had been bent and away from the force of the blast, though they had thankfully been bolted in place and remained upright. But most urgently, small plumes of gray smoke were slowly growing from multiple areas, impending fires if not dealt with quickly.

As I scanned the room, I spotted him. My uncle was face down on the ground, buried under some of the splintered rubble opposite of Seren. Though I couldn’t see how badly he had been injured, I feared the worst, as he laid completely still. A silent prayer ran through my mind, a hope that his own ludari heritage had helped him survive.

Seren saw him as well, and with a wide grin, gave him her undivided attention. Her arm outstretched, sending a crimson weave of magic, like a ribbon, speeding towards a darkened corner of the room. Out of the rubble, Alex’s arming sword flew to meet her hand, guided back by the spell.

“Let’s get this over with,” she muttered.

The end. 4 books of buildup all culminating into one epic finale. Every question answered, every mystery solved, all my hard work and planning coming to fruition with a breathtakingly bittersweet conclusion. Writing it made me feel like it was all worth it, even if no one but me ever reads it.

Jane's favorite place is in Phiron Library. A little cozy reading nook deep within, with blankets and pillows on a ledged seat against a stained glass window of Rix. When it rains, Jane would sometimes imagine the tapping against the stained glass as Rix himself, trying to comfort her.

As he began to leave, a million different questions raced to my lips, all struggling to be heard. But only one squeaked through. “What about my statement?”

Isaac stopped, his hand already grasping the handle of the door. I could see little of his face as he stared towards his exit, but through strands of his long gray hair, the wide venomous grin that spread across his lips was clear as day.

His voice rang low, yet strong with a dark finality. “There is no need. I’ve already written your lines, saving you the trouble of speaking them.” He gently swung open the door. “Goodbye, Jane Sothara. You will be missed.”

“Do you really think we can be like you?!” Erina smiled, seeming elated by the idea.

Liz laughed cheerfully. “Like me back in my prime? No. I had all the tools and resources at my disposal to become the best of the best.”

She cocked her head as she stared at the screen. “But… If you can learn even the smallest amount of magitech… You’d be better than me now…”

There was a haunting pain in her voice. Her shoulders slumped, and her confidence seemed to melt away, returning her to the Liz I knew. Though her smile remained, I could see then just how hollow it really was.

She was once regarded as one of the greatest magitechnicians the world had ever seen. But after the Ashes, after her focus gem was shattered, she was completely cut off from the greatest passion of her life, doomed to never cast magic again.

Just a moment before, the spark in her eyes was so powerful, so strong. For those brief minutes, she was on top of the world again, and could bend it to her will. Then, reality broke her down once more, and I couldn’t think of a single thing I could say to help her.

I wanted her back. I wanted the Elissa I had just met to be a part of her life again. She was so happy and proud. The Ashes may not have killed her body, but they killed her spirit, her heart just wasn’t in it anymore. She lived day to day as a shell of whom she once was. A shell of Elissa White. She was just… ‘Liz.’

“Careful now, Milo Ashton,” Cam said, squeezing his hand gently once more. “Don’t want you falling and messing up that pretty face of yours.”
Milo’s cheeks burned as he sputtered out, “I don’t have a pretty face.”
He quickly looked down, trying to find safety in hiding his face. Who was this man? He didn’t understand how anyone could just say things like that to a stranger so casually, things that weren’t even true. A pretty face. No one had ever called Milo pretty before. Why did he feel so excited by it?
Cam’s laugh echoed through the trees, then he placed a finger under Milo’s chin, forcing him to look up. Cam’s eyes methodically drew up and down Milo’s face—staring at each inch, lingering on his lips and his eyes—and he nodded firmly as his grin grew.
“That’s what I thought. You have a pretty face.”
Milo didn’t know what to do, what to say—so he just said, “Um.”

Spiral seethed with frustration, snarling towards the floor as she avoided making eye contact with any of us. “Do you think we can even trust them to do their jobs?”

“No.” Arthur replied. He turned, and headed to the door. “But it doesn’t matter; we can defend ourselves. I’ll keep watch, so get what little sleep you can. The meeting’s bound to be pushed back another day after this, so rest up.”

“We’re doing it tomorrow,” Spiral stubbornly complained. “Then we’re getting the hell out of here the day after. I’m not letting this get delayed again.”

“That’s up to the king to decide,” I said, finally finding my voice. “For now, let’s focus on resting while we can.”

With that, Cam turned to exit as well. “Not me. I’ll stay up and keep our tall friend some company.”

If she knows for certain that these are her sister's… Then does she know what happened here?

Putting my observations aside, I focused on Liz, and sat quietly with her. As painful as it was, she needed to be there. She had to have closure, to finally say goodbye.

We stayed there for a long time without speaking. But after a while, her tears dried, and she just stared at her sister's remains.

When she finally broke the silence, she spoke in a soft and strained voice. "I wish you two could have met. I know it sounds crazy, but… Cat had a kid… and I fell in love with her."

It took me a moment to realize that she wasn't talking to me. I chose to stay quiet, not wanting to interrupt.

"And Iris,” she continued, “I guess she finally got over what happened all those years ago. She got married, and you'll never guess to whom…"

Her shoulders and neck tensed, as pressure built, trying desperately to hold back the sorrow for just a little longer. "Prince Reese Alexander. That's right, you did it, sis… You saved him that night... You didn't die in vain…”

She grit her teeth and closed her eyes tight, determined to keep going as fresh tears wet her cheeks once more. “They even have kids! All thanks to you!”

#SeptemberWorldbuilders Mages can cast light spells that can guided around, while non-magic users have portable light emitters (flashlights), that run off of magic batteries. Even city power grids draw from magic sources, fueling their light bulbs, streetlights, and whatever else they need.
