I'm in that state where I've just finished some sort of story/media and now I need to find something else that will give me the exact same feeling so I can live in it for longer. This is why I so often watch/read/play movies, shows, books, games twice (or more) in a row. I'm not done with it yet.

Speaking of video games with a plague of undead...

I have to say, I don't like that we have already encountered creepy guys that crawl on the ceiling. They freak me out almost as much as the blobby guys from 4, but those ones didn't show up until much later in the game. SO WHAT IS COMING LATER??

I got to the part with the cannibal town, and when Joel finds Ellie at the end and calls her "baby girl" I just started BAWLING. I knew this game would wreck me, but oof. Right in the feels. So good.

#LitHodgepodge Day 8 Gonna answer these for the MC couples from the UNBREAKABLE BACHELORS series: Huxley would rather know how he dies, so he can try to prevent it, and Stella would rather know when, so she can make the most of the time she has. 🧵

#WIPSnips - LIZARD I wasn't going to do more GLC snips this close to release, but this use of "lizard" is one of my favourite lines in the book. Ethan helps get Chelsea home and tucked into bed after she gets a bit drunk (and a bit high) at a party.
A text-heavy graphic with a purple background featuring the title GET LUCKY CHARM and an illustration of two characters, a thirty-year-old guy in a plaid shirt carrying a twenty-something woman with a glowing necklace, kissing next to a text box that contains the following snippet:

I manage to kick off my newly untethered shoes and stagger towards my bedroom. I hope that lying down might help with the fact that the floor keeps trying to meet my face. Ethan keeps me upright until I reach my bed, and I crawl on top of it like a lizard seeking out a warm rock. He accidentally bumps the touch lamp on my bedside table and it flickers to life.
“What the—?”
“Lamp,” I say with my face smushed against my pillow. “You turn it on by touching it.”
He snorts.
“I didn’t mean for that to sound dirty.”

I have twisted my partner's arm into having them play Resident Evil 2 while I watch from behind my knitting, because I am too cowardly to play a game like this myself.

Writing funny, heartfelt, and offbeat romances that embrace the absurd and disgusting parts of being an entire, messy human trying to forge connections in the world. Or maybe it's word vomit.

It's that time of year again when I swap out my clothes from one season for another, and I have the urge to go all "capsule wardrobe" because I have Too Much Stuff. Maybe this will be the year I actually follow through with it. Haha.

#LitHodgepodge Day 7 It is very difficult to find a snippet I like that isn't 90% dialogue, but I tried. From GET LUCKY CHARM, when Chelsea is on a date with Luke (not the LI). This is the type of irreverent, casual, slightly rude tone of a lot of my writing.
It’s not a very long drive to his house—he has a whole house to himself—located a couple blocks from a park that I know is close to Ethan’s apartment. (I saw his driver’s license once and misread Bomer Street as Boner Street, so I’ll never forget it.)
The neighbourhoods on either side of the park couldn’t be more different from each other, though: one side has modest single and semi-detached houses, interspersed with mid-rise apartments and a corner store; the other side is McMansion Hell.
I hold my breath as we drive down the street, waiting to see which way Luke turns, and audibly exhale in relief when he turns into the driveway of one of the more modest red brick singles.
Expecting the house—which looks to be at least a hundred years old—to have some character to it, I’m disappointed to find that the interior has been gutted and decked out top-to-bottom in designer greys. High contrast accents of black metal and white marble are the only things that keep me from walking right into the grey-on-grey-on-grey furnishings.

#WIPSnips - COMPARISON Kieran has a stern talking to from his (two years younger) Dad Friend, Wade, after Kieran has been spending a suspicious amount of time around Brie's office.
A text-heavy graphic with a pink background featuring the title UNFORGETTABLE KIERAN MITCHELL. There are illustrations of two characters, a tall man in a suit and a curvy woman in a skirt, on each side of the text box. The text includes the follow snippet:

“Nice to see you again,” he says in that insincerely formal way that probably once made Brie think he was a Nice Guy. But I could tell by the way she closed off around him at breakfast that she’s not fooled by that sort of thing anymore.
I adopt an equally polite and pleasant tone when I respond, because I don’t want this asshole to think he can get under my skin. Not when I know that’s exactly what he’s trying to do.
Brie’s brilliant plan to show her ex that she’s moved on didn’t seem to account for the fact that he might not be as taken as he claimed to be. And that seeing her with someone else might make his underdeveloped lizard brain think about taking her back. As if he has a say in the matter.

Brie has a Loius Vuitton agenda for all her detailed plans, while her sister, Stella, runs on intuition and *vibes* and ends up in some not-so-great situations, sometimes. But her backup plan is: Brie will know what to do now.

I learned from my mistakes last time I released a book, and now I've scheduled all the release day emails I need to send AHEAD OF TIME, so that when I've completely noped out of my brain on the week of, I don't have to then figure out how to make words. 👍

I think the pre-book-launch stress has reached its threshold, so that means it's time for a cup of tea, a years-old stream of The Last of Us (which I have never seen or played), and knitting a sweater. Cozy.

#LitHodgepodge Day 6 Caleb's BFF Claire from SIDE QUEST is probably a Sidekick, in that she helps him get out of his head and his own anxieties, both through comic relief and sincere conversation. He is afraid of everything, and she is basically afraid of nothing, so she helps him face his fears.

I think Liam (Stella's and Veronica's ex) from the UB series is, deep down, afraid that he's not good enough as he is, and that he needs to lie and manipulate people in order to keep them in his life. I can relate to the feeling of "not enough" even if I don't agree with his selfish behaviour. 🧵

#WIPSnips - RICE Huxley's sister pesters him about his very obvious *secret* relationship with his assistant. Orla is definitely one of my favourite characters to write.
A text-heavy graphic with a yellow background featuring the title UNBEARABLE HUXLEY RONAN. There are illustrations of two characters, a large man in a suit and a petite woman in a skirt, on each side of the text box. The text includes the follow snippet:

“But, fair warning, I am going to befriend her, and I will tell her so many embarrassing stories about you.” She grins evilly before taking another bite of her lunch.
“I’d rather you didn’t.”
“Because you looooove her.”
I grumble indistinctly as I try to wolf down more of my lunch, too, since I don’t have a lot of time for a break today.
“Seriously, though, Hux,” Orla adds, lowering her hand and sobering her voice. “If there’s someone important to you in your life, I want to know about it.”
“So you can turn them against me?”
“No, you lunkhead,” she says, flicking a piece of rice at me. “I want to know because you’re my brother and I love you and I care about your life and shit. Don’t make this weird.”

#LitHodgepodge Day 5 For Audrey and Damien, happiness is playing their own video games on their own computers right next to each other. For Malcolm, it's doing basically anything with Evan and her daughter, Cori. For Caleb, it's getting into flow state while he's drawing.

#WIPSnips - WALL Veronica and Wade go to a pub in Wade's hometown for their first official date, and meet a couple of bartenders who you may recognize (after October 16th). 👀
A text-heavy graphic with a purple background featuring the title UNBELIEVABLE WADE ARMSTRONG. There are illustrations of two characters, a slim man in a suit and a curvy woman with glasses, on each side of the text box. The text includes the follow snippet:

There are chalkboard menus on every wall, interspersed with music-themed murals and artwork, as well as vintage LPs in frames. Sasha works here every Saturday night to do tech for the weekly live music, and Wade thought it would be fun for us to tag along to grab something to eat and drink. Our first official date in public, as a couple.
I squeeze his hand back, mostly to reassure myself that we can do this. No one who knows us is going to see us together here. I can relax and enjoy it.
“Oh, hey, take a seat wherever.” A woman with a tangled knot of chestnut hair on top of her head greets us from behind the bar and waves us towards the tables that fill the pub. “Food menus are there”—she points to one wall, and then another—“and beer menus are there. And if you want recommendations for beer that doesn’t taste like a hop threw up in your mouth, ask me, not him.” She gestures to the guy in plaid pouring beer next to her, who stops to flick the side of her head without looking.

#SundaySnips - EERIE I have one (1) use of this word in my WIPs. I'm surprised I had any. Stella's POV. I guess this could be considered kind of a spoiler, since it's near the end of the book, but honestly, all snippets are kind of spoilers. Dead dove, do not eat.
A text-heavy graphic with a yellow background featuring the title UNBEARABLE HUXLEY RONAN. There are illustrations of two characters, a large man in a suit and a petite woman in a skirt, on each side of the text box. The text includes the follow snippet:

“Well…” I stare down at my bathroom counter, unsure whether to be pleased or terrified. Either way, an eerie calm has settled over me, now that I have an answer for why I’ve been feeling so tired and out of sorts the past couple of weeks. A reason besides my own heartbreak.
Shay is rocking violently in my arms, trying to reach for the fun new toy I’ve left on the counter, sorely out of range of his grabby little hands.
“Shay, honey, settle down. That’s not for you.” I try to distract him with some bouncing, but he starts wailing because Mommy is evil and won’t let him have the Thing. He kicks out one of his legs when I turn to leave the bathroom, sending the object in question flying off the counter and skidding across the hall, almost all the way to my bedroom. “You sure taught it a lesson, huh?”

#LitHodgepodge Day 4 Question for anyone who wants to answer: How do you like to introduce a character's backstory without infodumping or sounding really clunky and awkward? I tend to go either too CLONK or just nonexistent, and I'm not sure where the sweet spot is.

This actually happens in the UB series at least once, so I can easily say: it was Stella's idea. Every single party or event as a group is her idea, except for Pub Night, which is always Wade's idea. Without Stella, none of these friends would see each other outside of work. 😂 🧵

I am not really a "spooky season"/Halloween person, but the one thing I do enjoy about this time of year is watching ASMR videos of horror games like Phasmophobia. Soft-spoken horror. Relaxing horror. Do I still jump out of my skin if a ghost shows up? Of course I do. But I'm chill about it.

#WIPSnips - PETAL ("flowers") Less than 2 weeks until the book comes out, so idk if it's a WIP still, but I do need to do one last read-through, so... Here's Chelsea jumping to some conclusions about stuff, because that's what she does.
A text-heavy graphic with a purple background featuring the title GET LUCKY CHARM and an illustration of two characters, a thirty-year-old guy in a plaid shirt carrying a twenty-something woman with a glowing necklace, kissing next to a text box that contains the following snippet:

Stepping under the hot spray of the shower is utterly blissful after the night I’ve had. A chance to wash away all of the cold sweat and hair vomit—and Luke’s slobber—along with all my worries. It’s a fresh start.
I also use the opportunity to snoop in Ethan’s bathroom, since this is probably the only chance I’ll ever get. There’s a rubber ducky on a shelf above the sink, and judging by the dust on it, it’s just for decoration. He also has three mostly-used tubes of toothpaste on the counter, like he can’t be bothered to finish one before starting another.
And he has women’s hair products in his shower.
I don’t register it right away, as I take a large handful of shampoo and start to lather it into my hair, but when the lavender-vanilla scent fills the steamed-up shower, I double-check the bottle. It has a frou-frou label on it with flowers and words like sulphate-free and volume-enhancing, along with the matching conditioner.
“Why would—” I freeze with my hands in my hair, mid-rinse. “Holy shit.”

#LitHodgepodge Day 3 Audrey from LEVEL UP is pretty much the only character I have non-cover art for, so here you go. I think the title of the book gives away what her hobby already is, so pick something else. 😂
A pair of loose sketches of a twenty-something woman with chin-length curly hair and an oversized sweater. One is a head-and-shoulders portrait, and the other is a full-body where she is holding up her phone as though taking a mirror selfie. In the full-body sketch, she is wearing loose-fitting trousers and sneakers as well. The entire image is monochromatic, in orange and brown shades, with a watercolour effect for loose shading, against a beige background with a white grid. There is no artist signature because I forgot to include one, whoops.

A text-heavy graphic with a pink background featuring the title ROLL PLAY and an illustration of two characters, a tall twenty-something guy and a plus-size thirty-something woman, kissing next to a text box that contains the following snippet:

“You don’t have much faith in me, do you?”
“It’s not that, it’s just…” She sighs and tips her head back, letting her eyes shut. “This is all really scary for me, and I’m constantly worrying about things that could go wrong.”
“Because of me?”
“No, because I have a preteen daughter,” she says, looking over at me again. “She’s growing up, and is going to have to deal with things I really wish she didn’t have to deal with. I want to be able to shield her from all of that, but I can’t. And I know, I know. My job isn’t to shield her from the world, but to give her the tools to handle whatever the world throws at her. But I still just—I want to hit pause sometimes. I want to let her be a little kid, just a bit longer.
“She’s going to be a young woman soon, in a society that objectifies young women. A sexist, fatphobic society that will make her think she’s not good enough. That she has to spend her energy trying to be what other people want, instead of being herself.

#FaveLineFriday From the only actual writing I did this week, which was just dialogue from a new scene in my upcoming rewrite of ULB. I think this encapsulates Lucian's and Orla's personalities well.
L: Has it occurred to you that you might have an easier time if you didn’t continuously make bad choices?
O: Has it occurred to you that you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about?
L: Not often.
