“Ata, sorry, Princess Ata.” This young man bowed forward, a fist held over his heart, “I’m afraid my name is Marrok now.”
Neither spoke further as shields were raised in front of the princess and a firm hand dragged her back. Marrok was leaner, hair no longer rusted spikes but coils of polished copper. Ata felt a wooden block pressed tight around each wrist, heavy on a neck far frailer then. Drenched by rain, she shivered. Not yet dry despite years of warmth. His eyes lowered, heavy with regret.
Princess Ceindrych had finally stood, “he came to us, a wolf with no name and was given another to make him a man again.”
“You knighted him?” A bear-like rumble echoed in Ata’s chest.
“He’s an ordained paladin.” This diminutive girl held onto Marrok’s elbow and elaborated, “he saved me from the dog-head bandits and after months of study passed the Chivalric Measure.”
“If I may speak-”
“I’m not sure you may,” She cut him off with an ursine scowl, then sighed as the man flinched, “but I suppose if you need to.”
“I do.” That lake-blue stare wrinkled in careful consideration of each word before he spoke them, “I’m sorry. You have every right to hate me, but through God I am trying to be better.”

Sir Seren greeted him with a handshake. Under her hooded mantle, Sir Corbyn spotted a breastplate woven from stiff fabric rather than hammered out of metal. Odder still, she kept a small weapon holstered on one hip. While similar to his shotgun, it had a shorter barrel and fit snuggly in one hand. Instead of pellets this weapon launched barbed darts attached to wire cables. He expected no less from a knight of Idris.
A fist thumped against her chest, “Sir Corbyn, we fought together on the continent when I was still a squire. Anything I can do to help you.”
