Below Bludeye Beach is officially getting a Reader's Guide, despite how far out this book is from being any kind of completed 😂 The third book in the Bludeye Beach series (book one is out now), it's definitely got some of my favorite spooky scenes of the series 🥰 #writingcommunity #wip #horror
Backdrop is a blue and gray fuzzy outline of a woman in a big hat standing next to a wall, looking very ghostly and ethereal. Text at the top reads “A reader’s guide to Below Bludeye Beach.” There are three columns. Column on the left reads “Tropes: Emo x Sunshine, Found Family, Small-town horror, Winter Ghost Story, Strained Family Relationships, Trust the Dog, Something Wicked This Way Comes”. Middle column reads “Pitch: A year after the events of Return to Bludeye Beach, Edie Grayson thinks she has a handle on life in a spirited small town. But winter’s chill brings the touch of otherworldly presence; the dead of Bludeye Beach cannot lay still, and Edie finds herself in a ghostly maelstrom. But something – or someone – sits at its center…” The column on the right reads “Comps.” There are images of the book “What Feasts at Night” by T. Kingfisher, “Grave Peril” by Jim Butcher, and “The Haunting of Hill House” mini-series.

Happy #LitHodgePodge 6 (and thank you Pam for providing some archetype resources, this is a blindspot in my own education!) In BLUDEYE BEACH, Edie is certainly the hero - pushed put into hard circumstance & facing supernatural trials, armed pretty much only with compassion.

Happy #WipSnips 5! In the third BLUDEYE book, we get to see a little more of Madam Morgan's past rivalries 🫢
Madam Morgan rose like shadows climbing a wall with a throaty hiss, her bone-white skin glowing in the dark. But now [Spoiler] had time to pull something from his pocket; with a practiced movement, he pointed what looked like a stone with a hole in its center at her.
“I never thought I’d see you darken my doorstep again, Skleros of Scorn,” Madam Morgan snarled. “Damnedable wizard. Arrogant old fool.”

Having seen the Joyce Carol Oates very bad, not good tweet about romance and AI, I can't help thinking about the way that romance has been treated as a punching bag for so long and always by people who are completely unwilling to engage with the genre and know little about it.

Happy #WIPSnips 4 - Contract There are a *lot* of contracts in this wip 😂
“It’s in our contract to handle the full moon how we see fit, so long as it doesn’t cause harm to others or put the charge at risk,” Luke said carefully. “Ignoring the lockdown puts the charge at risk.”
“The charge is fine,” Mary Anne insisted. “It was never in danger. This Temple is the safest place for miles around.”

Happy ##LGBTQWriteAThon 4! Snagging a synonym idea for 'ominous'
Cat’s apartment sat on the other side of town, near the Black Hole. She was quiet as Edie drove, watching the breaking waves of the ocean. Sheets of rain stretched toward the horizon, iron-gray clouds hanging ominously low. Waves crashed against the beach with particular ferocity, the breakers less a dreamy white than an icy violence of shattering spray.

Happy #WIPSnips 3 - petal Some of Ivy's inner musings from the beginning of the book ❤️🌸
This time of year always makes me nostalgic, of chains, and unending lines. My mother used to lay my crib beneath the blooming Witchbird while she did her casting, divining from the clouds and tracing signs for spring rains. I don’t technically remember that, but every time I lay my daughter beneath those same blossoms, it was as if I summoned dormant images laying in my mind; as my mother’s arms lay me down, so I lay down Summer, letting her chubby little legs kick in the air and her tiny fingers grasp at the bright pink petals.

Happy #WIPSnips 2 - Dent A whole lot of potentially spoilery things from the third Bludeye book, but don't worry about what a Lost Ones is 😂
Manny scrambled to his feet. The Lost Ones had already started swinging away from them. They tried to chase it, but it soon outstripped them, sliding into the shadows.
“It’s definitely slowing down,” Milo said. “I think Cillian’s trying to tire it out.”
“Should we follow it?” Manny asked. Milo glanced back at the parking lot. The hood of the Prius was dented, but the car should still run, and he’d apologize to Mr. Coltsworth later.

Happy #WIPSnips 1 - Injury! In this sequel to BLUDEYE BEACH, Edie spends quite a bit of time reflecting on the different paths her life will take, though they all spring from the same past.
When she’d first called Emily to tell her she was extending her two-week stay to help Teddy recover from his injury, Edie’s mother had dutifully shipped a few boxes of her belongings to Teddy’s house. Which was how Edie had found her copy of Grandma Delilah’s Snickerdoodle Cookie recipe, following her to this new phase of her life, even if it was little more than a nebulous in-between phase.

The Time of Reflections
Well, well, well, October. Fancy seeing you here. The final third of 2026. The last quarter of the year. Which, frankly, seems impossible. But it always does at this time of year, doesn't it? If I looked hard enough, I'm sure I'd find old messages and posts with my name attached, saying something to the effect of "whoa, is it really almost 2024?!" and "Omg it's almost 2019" and, and...

Happy #WIPSnips 30 - Guard! In a world where most types of magical beings exist, Audrey very helpfully explains what sets Lunarbeasts apart.
“Why do the werewolves need a Medic?” Prince Uldryn asked, eyes wide.
“There’s a lot of things that our bodies are very good at doing,” Audrey explained. “But we’re technically shapeshifters, which gives us a different kind of body than most other species. It makes us very good at guarding important things. We’re immune to most magic, and we’re naturally very resilient. Unfortunately, it also means a lot of medicine and healing can look like an attack to a damaged body, so Lunarbeasts require specialized medical attention.”

My updated reader's guide for THE YEARNING SKY. I don't know when I'll have a chance to work on this again, but I am excited to do so 😂
Green backdrop with several different leafy plants, and the purple outline of a flying dragon. Text at the top reads “A reader’s guide to The Yearning Sky” with three columns beneath. Column one reads “Tropes”: Older MC & LI, Grumpy x Sunshine, Annoyance to Lovers, He’s good with animals, She’s good with snark, I hate everyone but you, Strong mother & daughter bond, Animal companions. The middle column reads “Pitch:” In a world where dragons have been extinct for 100 years, Ivy the witch just wants to raise her 16 year old daughter in peace. Prince Merric arrives at her door with a request to help save his people. Ivy is forced to agree when her daughter accidentally hatches the dragon egg he’s brought with him, sending the trio around the country to save the day, dragons, and Ivy & Merric’s blooming love story. The third column reads “Comps” with images for Gilmore Girls, Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede, and Thor Ragnarok.

Happy #WIPSnips 29 - Well Edie, a fully adult woman in her twenties, accidentally sleeps over at her boyfriend's place for the first time. Which only really matters since she's been staying with her dad, Teddy - except, uh, it's very unlikely Teddy would care 😂 but some panics die hard 🤷‍♀️
“I gotta get home,” Edie said, scrambling to her feet. “My dad’s gonna kill me.”
Milo stood up with her, letting her hold on to him for balance as she shoved on her shoes.
“But … would he?” Milo asked. “Be upset you stayed out, I mean?”
Edie had to pause to think about that.
“Probably not,” she admitted, her mind slowly clearing away the rush of panic. “I let him know I was gonna be here. He wasn’t around when that would’ve been a big deal. But I was a well-behaved kid. I saved all the bad stuff for when I moved out of the house.”
“Sounds like you should be making up for lost time,” Milo teased. “Wanna do some drugs later?”

Happy #WIPSnips 28 - Prime! What kind of writer inserts a bathhouse scene into their book just to accelerate the ~tension~ and ~yearning~ into their romantasy with a witch and a prince 😮‍💨 (It's me, I'm writer) From THE YEARNING SKY, featuring Ivy and her wandering but deep in denial eyes 😂
"It gets easier,” Merric supplied. I glanced over at him—then forced myself to meet his eyes. The water was cloudy with foam and some kind of cleanser. While I could stay submerged up to my neck, Merric’s broad frame kept his chest and shoulders well above water, and in my line of sight.
Strong, navigable lines, a topographic description of his life on the road. Dark, coarse hair rippled over his chest, but not too thick. It accentuated his well-defined muscles, and just enough softness to his form to show a man well into his prime.
It was a very, very quick glance. Just … very informative, as well.

Happy #WIPSnips 26 - Observe > Watch In the third BLUDEYE book, Edie and her mom are in the middle of a big fight. This attempt at reconciliation isn't starting so well 😬
“Hi, Mom,” Edie said weakly. She could only stare at her mother’s face, and pray.
Emily’s eyes raked up and down, taking in the mud, the displaced clothes. No doubt another half dozen things to disagree with. Edie watched her take a deep breath, and fix a smile to her face.
	“Hello, Edie,” Emily said.
	Edie’s heart cracked.
She was Edie. Not sweetie, not pumpkin, not honey.

Happy #WIPSnips 25 - (Hiber)nation! I don't have any nation by itself 😅 at least in this snip, Edie is heading into a nation of sorts 👀
The air thrummed with power. In the summer, the woods were alive with insects and birds and growing plants, and the vibrancy was palpable. Now, the trees were halfway to hibernation, but she could still feel the buzz of latent energy all around. Edie almost expected the trees to burst into bloom, but the birches just kept watch with their scarred eyes.
         Eyes that now followed them.

Happy #WIPSnips 24 - Meddle > Interfere Turns out I don't really use the word meddle. Like, ever 😂 Anyway, everything's normal at the Church of the Eternal One
“If we try something, we’re going to be outcast from each of our Clans,” Ramsey pointed out. “Our contracts will be nullified. We’ll all be homeless. And [redacted] will still be dead.”
“There has to be something,” Isabelle repeated.
“What right do we have to interfere?” Luke asked. The words were pulled from somewhere deep inside of him, as if his father were echoing himself from the past. Standing with Luke outside of the Draco Aurum nightclub as lifeless victims were wheeled out, drained completely of blood. Prisoners set to be executed; rewards given to their families. And the oldest son of the Dusk vampire family had live entertainment for his party.
